Around 75 students from Tirohanga and Whakamaru Schools with adult supervisors and Kids Greening Taupo co-ordinators helped plant hundreds of natives from the Nursery alongside the Mōkai Te Ure Stream on May 22. The Miraka project was supported with a barbecue trailer from Central Transport Limited on which Miraka and Nursery staff cooked 200 sausages to keep energy levels up.
A great day's work and learning about native plants and riparian restoration.

Another article in the series on how to encourage native insects and beneficial insects in general in our gardens and on the land under our care.
Maintaining leaf litter, leaving seed heads on plants, ensuring a supply of autumn and winter-flowering plants are all measures that help (and may not involve much expense in money or energy). Native winter flowering whauwhau or five-finger (Psuedopanax arboreus) gets an honourable mention, as does the striking kotukutuku (Fuchsia excorticata) which can be a bit harder to get established but is worth the effort for its flaky bark, edible fruit, flowers that attract birds and bees and for being one or Aotearoa's few deciduous or semi-deciduous natives.
The article tells you more about the life-cycle of native bees and why not to be too alarmed if you see quite a number of dead bumblebees on the ground in autumn.

Tūaropaki Native Plant Nursery is gearing up for the 2024 planting season and already taking orders from established customers as well as some new clients.
While the weather is beyond the control of us mere mortals, site preparation and care (good stock proof fences, spot spraying, a plan for releasing during the establishment years) are something that can be managed.
Nursery manager Stu Maxwell can advise on these and the best species for the sites you want to retire and revegetate, or enhance with in-fill planting.
The nursery has large numbers of species that will suit riparian areas, such as:
Flax
Cabbage Tree - Ti Kouka
Carex
Coprosma robusta
Fivefinger
Pittosporum colensoi
Kahikatea
Or drier sites, such as:
Pittosporum tenuifolium
P. eugenoides
Mahoe
Manuka
Totara
Makomako - Wineberry

Contact Stu early to ensure the native enhancement of your land or project will be all go this autumn/winter.

Planting natives to ensure there are habitats for native insects, as well as birds, can help us encourage threatened bug species to thrive.
That's the subject of this story in online academic magazine The Conversation https://theconversation.com/nz-votes-the-red-admiral-butterfly-bug-of-the-year-how-to-make-your-garden-its-home-223083?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=The%20Weekend%20Conversation%20-%202883829280&utm_content=The%20Weekend%20Conversation%20-%202883829280+CID_86c11c1508f723fdb4766921455fe7da&utm_source=campaign_monitor&utm_term=NZ%20votes%20the%20red%20admiral%20butterfly%20bug%20of%20the%20year%20%20how%20to%20make%20your%20garden%20its%20home

Muehlenbeckia species such as climbing pohuehue and shrubby tororaro are mentioned in the story as important host plants for many native butterflies, as well as many native moths.
Author Janice Lord of Otago University and Connal McLean of Te Papa Tongarewa say they will follow this with future articles that will offer seasonal advice on gardening and lifestyle practices to help bugs in your backyard.

The native red admiral is less common than it used to be, but we can all help threatened bug species by ensuring they have the right habitats to thrive in.

Summer and autumn is a time for harvest. The Heritage Seed Garden at the Native Plant Nursery has a good crop of various peas, beans and alliums to spread out and dry prior to setting them aside for storage. Parsnips, mustard and radishes are also being pulled out for their seedheads.
