It is love at first whiff every time I step inside this casual Indian eatery. There’s plenty of bustle and noisy chatter, while the smoky aromas speak of delicious Indian cooking. Chaska’s sprawling Indian food scene runs a gamut of regional styles and specialties, with a Bollywood symphony of fantastic flavors. From homely dhal dishes to Punjabi meats worth getting in line for.

The Owners wanted to rebrand Chaska’s identity for the new age foodie, after 15years of successfully being one of Auckland’s best Indian restaurants.

Our Solution

I chose to take inspiration from the rustic dhabas, found along the highways in North India, to the unique colourful Indian street food culture. Chaska has been designed with keeping in mind the structure in chaos that is a part of everyday life in India.

A street caricature was created my artist haider faraz for the entire wall behind the counter. I used utensils to create a quirky installation on one side and a photo wall depicting all the cultures of India on the other. The furniture/storage units were custom designed and the table tops are an example of unique joinery.

I made the ceiling lighting out of crates and used them in colourful clusters. An intimate seating booth was added to the floor plan that doubles up as the cutlery cupboard on the other side.

A handicapped toilet was added to the eatery which has been accessorised by a collage of Bollywood posters and quirky art created by me.

To add privacy, the entire front façade glass with covered with a one way vision vinyl with a colourful caricature. A 3D signage was finally installed to a pink roof making sure that Chaska’s location remains iconic.

Mela - The Great Indian Carnival was conceived to be a platform for artists from all fields of art to expression freely located in New Lynn.

I have always aimed at creating a space of artistic collaboration and when Sid approached me with the idea of Mela, I accepted and started working on it instantly. It eventually took the form of a 90 day pop up art, music and food carnival.

I started with the logo and had the complete facade painted like a circus tent. I worked alongside 10 graphite artists and created detailed briefs for all of them. These artworks depicted the strong bonds between Indian and NZ cultures and strengthened the existing cultural tie.

A box office was made at the entrance which led to a triangular stage in the centre of the floor for musicians and performers. I also strategically placed an art gallery space next to the stage for all visual artists.

The 1st floor consisted of hawker stalls resembling a bazaar for the vendors selling crafts and a movie theatre for kids. The food vendors had carts on wheels to serve their delicacies.

I created all the marketing collaterals and graphic design required for Mela over the 90 days.

Mela became a melting pot of creative expression and surely touched the hearts of whoever witnessed the carnival.

Quattro, The Albany pub

Local history sets 1847 as the year for the first pub in Lucas creek, on what is now the site of The Albany. it represents that generation of good old Kiwi pubs.

When I was asked to redesign the interiors of their fine dine restaurant - Quattro, my intention was to showcase its rich history. This gave rise to the new look and feel of Quattro, still keeping in line with its wooden furniture and leather couches.

Definitely a great place for food in Albany, Auckland.

Mocambo on Hobson Street.

Situated on Hobson street in Auckland, Mocambo was created as a place where people from all nationalities can come together to celebrate life. It had to be a transformable space which included a bar and dining space that could also be used for events and conferences.

Mocambo is designed as a time capsule of the past existing in this present. I was Inspired from the art of Piet Mondrian, one of the pioneers of 20th century abstract art and created a pattern that encompasses Mocambo’s persona through bold lines and rectangles. The gold accents are brilliant and I took this pattern into 3D to create a coherent flow throughout Mocambo.
A balustrade and a door were fabricated in metal with the same pattern. The bar is a mix of metal cubes of various sizes flowing to create shelves with a bold metal front facade with the embossed logo. An in store signage in metal was installed so that it would be visible from Hobson street above the entrance staircase to welcome customers into the space. All the furniture was custom built in metal and soft velvet upholstery accented the space.
I designed a wall mural depicting New Zealand with a cubist twist in 3D which complemented Mocambo as an artistic space appropriate for any occasion in the heart of Auckland.

Located in the south island of New Zealand in a beautiful mountain environment surrounded by native forest, Luminate welcomes thousands of people from around the world for eight days of music, dance, knowledge sharing, creative inspiration, celebration and transformation.

Luminate features 5 zones of music with a unique line-up of International and New Zealand artists.

Ecological initiatives permeate all strands of the Luminate experience and have been fundamental to the festival’s ethos from the beginning in 2008.

Spacecraft Studio and One At Peace collaborated to design and build the main stage of Luminate Festival 2017. The stage had to be built using eco-friendly materials and techniques.

Bamboo was the main material available on the festival site, so we started with designing a bamboo 3D frame for the main stage. Every joint of the frame had to be secured by twisting a metal wire around it and wrapping it with strips of rubber tire tubes. There were more than 200 joints. With the frame complete we added coloured fabrics to brighten up the stage. The colours chosen were in line with the festival’s identity.

The On-stage area was designed keeping in mind the movement of people and equipment that would be brought on and off stage. We decorated it using native plants and art from the previous years to keep the feeling of sustainability and reusability of resources consistent with the festival.

The centre piece was created by artist jadyn flavell and James Flynn in collaboration. To complete the main stage, two projection screens with the festival logo were added on the two sides.

The canopy was constructed in two concentric circles. The outer circle was kept in a uniform incline, increasing as it came closer to the centre. The Inner circle was constructed in 3 layers and had 3 large size crystals hung from the centre as a sign of a pure and sacred space.

Shubh is an iconic Indian restaurant in Sandringham (with a new branch in Onehunga), Auckland. They offer authentic homemade style North Indian food. Over the years it has become a community eatery for lovers of Indian food. With its popularity increasing, it was time for a makeover.

I Started with designing the logo and then designed the space as a cultural walk through depicting the Indian hospitality culture that Shubh represents.

Shubh translates to auspicious, and that was my inspiration for the interiors. Indians decorate their homes with Rangoli designs before festivals and on auspicious occasions. I contemporized Indian Rangoli and Henna tattoo designs to create artworks for the facade and the internal walls.

The colours for Shubh were inspired from the mud huts in rural Indian villages. I personally painted the walls with a stylized Rangoli design that I developed. The takeaway area and the kitchen were separated by walls and swing doors. These walls have decorated windows for the staff to keep a look at the shop while in the kitchen.

A collection of paintings depicting the rural hospitality culture and traditions of North India were specially created by Retd. Col. V. Taode (my father). These paintings were placed over the rangoli designs to create a flow in the room.

Customized booth furniture and tables were made keeping to the theme. Even the toilet mirror has a rangoli design around it.

Be sure to visit Shubh Restaurant in Sandringham to Dine in and revel up in the ambiance of culture, tradition, and talent.

Aura started with the need for a space with a unique atmosphere for mature individuals seeking a glamorous nightlife in Auckland. Its interiors had to symbolize elegance. But an elegance that's set against a backdrop of decadent walls and glamorous interiors. It had to be the classic club from people who savour spectacular opulence.

Aura is a true original. I was inspired by the ‘Geometric Abstraction’ art movement and created a pattern that encompasses Aura’s persona in black and white. The white accents are brilliant, and they intentionally contrast a darkness that most clubs attempt and few really embrace. Aura’s darkness is deep and beautiful. It knows how to keep you looking toward the dance floor whether you're at a table right by it or at the bar.

The entryway of this chic and contemporary space is illuminated by the glow of metallic chandelier juxtaposed with a tall backlit panel with Aura’s signature design on it. A floating Aura sign above the circular staircase welcoming all into the luxurious black and white decor with one full-service bar, leather seating, elegant VIP booths and a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system.

I designed Aura as a sanctuary for all things precious – the décor and design are no exception. Attention to detail abounds where combinations of rich black textures and modern elements create a harmoniously paired aesthetic. A resplendent minimal black and white palette complements the club’s intricate details creating a luxurious yet

contemporary vibe. Vivid custom-designed ambient and mood lighting on both the ceiling raft and feature wall behind the DJ booth, create an ultra-sensory experience. The DJ booth in itself is an installation art piece.

Aura is already becoming a favourite party spot both for visitors and local industry insiders, at the heart of Auckland’s famous Viaduct area. A lavish escape from traditional nightlife, Aura stands apart by offering an ambiance and energy rarely seen in a medium sized nightclub. Aura surely is one of the most fashionable destinations Auckland City has to offer.
