Proud to have sponsored the Turangi Dambusters U11s Player of the Day this season – $20 each week for our future sports stars 🌟💪

Half the team were brand new to the game, and to see their growth, grit, and teamwork each Sunday was something special. Big mihi to the coaches, parents, and tamariki who showed up rain or shine for training and game day. Your effort didn’t go unnoticed 👏🏽 🥇

As a former Dambuster myself and now a proud dad on the sideline I can’t wait to see how far these kids go.

Season’s done, but the journey’s just begun

“Dambusters!”

Wishing everyone a productive Hump Day, especially all you awesome clients and followers that actually engage.

As for the quote ghosters, may your floors squeak, your stud finder lie, and your reno budget double. Just kidding… or am I?😂

Check this stunning log home out I was lucky enough to do some work on back in my apprenticeship days.

Kia ora e te whānau, it’s been a minute!
I haven’t posted on here since Feb, for those wondering and visiting my page for updates the truth is I’ve been head down, busy as ever juggling work, life, and everything in between. Trying to catch up on a backlog of jobs while also building a new chapter for myself personally has been pretty full on, but I’m still here and still going strong!

One paticular job that really meant a lot recently was a lean-to project I completed out at Korohe Marae. Big mihi to the whānau there for trusting me with the mahi. It’s this kind of work that reminds me why I love what I do building for our wider whānau on our whenua.
Shout out to the boys at Dempsey Contractors for doing the concrete pad with washout drain.

If you're part of a Marae, Kōhanga Reo, Kura, or Community Group looking for help with repairs, renovations, shelters, or anything similar, I’d be honoured to kōrero about how JH Building can help. This is the kind of mahi I back 100%.

Ngā mihi for the ongoing support, stay tuned, for more project photos and updates recently completed.

Meet my Koro Hareruia (Loui) Wall, my mum’s father.

Born with no legs, a stump for one arm, and three half digits on the other hand.
He was a husband, father to three girls and one boy, a cabinet maker, guitarist, hunter-gatherer, and swimmer who even saved a boy from drowning. He was also a rugby player, a quick cigarette roller, and was offered the chance to tour the world as the “fingerless guitarist.”

Sadly, he passed away at just 37. He was an inspiration to many, and his achievements always remind me of what a man can accomplish without the same tools as everyone else.

His story reminds me daily that determination and skill matter more than the tools you’re given. I carry that mindset into every project I take on building with passion, problem-solving, and never backing down from a challenge.”

Forever missed Koro.

📢 The Reality of Running a One-Man Building Business 🛠️

Being a sole trader in the building game is a mixed bag – full of rewards but packed with challenges. This image sums it up pretty well

✅ The Pros:

✔️ Total control – I call the shots on how jobs are done.
✔️ Personal service – My clients deal directly with me, no middlemen.
✔️ Flexibility – I can drop work for family matters when needed.
✔️ Job satisfaction – Seeing a project through from start to finish is rewarding.
✔️ Building relationships – Word-of-mouth referrals mean everything.
✔️ Trying new products & materials – I get to experiment with new ways to build better.
✔️ Knowing people in a small town – It helps with networking and trust.

❌ The Challenges:
⚠️ Quoting, invoicing, and chasing payments – all on top of building.
⚠️ No guaranteed income – if I’m not working, I’m not earning.
⚠️ Managing everything – from materials to marketing, I wear every hat.
⚠️ Unexpected issues – Delays, supplier problems, weather, and surprises mid-job.
⚠️ Work-life balance – Juggling family, jobs, and admin isn’t easy.
⚠️ The pressure – One mistake can cost time and money.
⚠️ Small-town pricing struggles – I know a lot of people, but that makes it hard to charge full market rates.
⚠️ Spending time on quotes and getting nothing back – A frustrating reality of the job!

I love what I do, but running a small business is no walk in the park. Aku mihi mahana to everyone who supports local tradies like me, whether it’s booking a job, referring me to a whanau member/mate, or just understanding that good work takes time!
If you’re thinking of going out on your own, feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I’ll be happy to give my knowledge and some advice from what I’ve learned so far.

🌿 Te Ara Pākihi – A New Chapter with Moko Consultancy 🌿
He kaupapa hou, he huarahi hou, mō tatou, ā, mō ngā uri whakatipu.

Te Ara Pākihi is now proudly led by Moko Consultancy—a space that has embraced collaboration, connection, and empowerment amongst 23 small businesses at our launch on 31 Jan 2025 in Turangi. But for me, as the owner of Moko, this journey is new in one important way: I am leading this kaupapa not on behalf of a client, but as my own business. This is growth—not just for me, but for our people.

🔥 This is about uplifting our Māori entrepreneurs at home—the ones often unseen, yet rich in skill and potential.
🔥 This is about delivering excellence—not just because we carry cultural values, but because we are highly skilled and business-ready.
🔥 This is about creating opportunity—not just for ourselves, but for our whānau, our hapū, and our communities.

Our voice matters in shaping the future of employment, business, and education. From tertiary institutions to MSD employment pathways to Iwi and hapū agreements, we need an ecosystem that connects the dots:

💡 Small businesses + workforce development + employment pathways = long-term success.

Does this not make sense? If you’re ready to be part of this movement, work with us—let’s build, uplift, and create sustainable futures together.

💬 Drop a comment, DM us, or follow our journey. Watch this space—Te Ara Pākihi is just getting started!

A rusted nail that was well hidden and blended into some native timber studs got my planer pretty good!
One common problem in renovations is bowed studs which need a bit of shaving or packing to straighten them for the new wall linings.
A bit of tool maintenance over the long weekend and its ready for some action again.

Well, folks, what a mission that was!

I won’t lie—running this competition was a bit of a headache! 😆 Turns out, not everyone can read or follow instructions properly. To those who actually read the T’s&C’s thank you!😁

That being said, I’m definitely not giving up on giveaways, but I’ll be switching things up and approaching them from a different angle next time.

After a late night of sifting through entries and weeding out ineligible comments (more comments didn’t mean more entries, by the way!) and noting who shared and tagged for the extra entries we finally found our winner from the 77 eligible entries. Huge thanks to my daughter for her help with the process!

🎉 Congratulations to Brendabidz Biddle🎉

Please get in touch so we can arrange a time for you to collect your prize.

Thank you to everyone who entered, supported, and interacted with the post. Your engagement means a lot!
Stay tuned for future updates, developments, and giveaways, I’ve got some exciting things in the works.
