Back from a mid-winter holiday in Australia and readying the first shipments of spring. Pictured here are two gorgeous Livistona chinensis palms originating from southern Japan, Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, south-eastern China and Hainan. Slow growing with huge, almost undivided leaves that droop at the ends, these beauties will thrive throughout New Zealand. Do get in touch in you’d like one in your garden!

Mid-winter’s day tidy up at the plantation. King palms (Archontophoenix alexandrae) and Majestic palms (Ravenea rivularis) enjoying the winter sunshine. Young Ensete bananas and mature ‘Lady fingers’ bananas with semi-ripe crop.

Jelly palms – Butia capitata. These attractive palms produce around 10kg of edible fruit a year. Rich in vitamin C they are also a powerful antioxidant. We’ve found our larger palms usually fruit within 1-2 years of planting. The fruit can be used to produce either a jam or wine. The palms themselves are a relative of the coconut (the stone inside the fruit is actually a miniature coconut) but will take considerable cold and are thus suitable for almost anywhere in NZ. Grey/blue leaves and slow growing they’re suitable for all but the smallest of gardens.

BIG Washingtonia robusta palms ready for planting. These palms (better known as the Mexican fan palm) are tough, fast growing and able to withstand moderate frosts.

The big Chinese Fan palms (Livistona chinensis) are settling into their new home after a very dry summer. New deep green leaves and the first signs of leaves being held in different planes suggest that these are going to look rather breath-taking in a couple of years.

The true date palm, Phoenix dactylifera (calm down, it’s not the common / weedy P. canariensis – this is a much more attractive palm) and a very young Bismarckia nobilis from Madagascar in what will be our Mediterranean garden. Yes, we sell the date palms and no, the Bismarckias aren’t available yet (since everyone always asks!).
