Queen of Flies...
Our Queen of the flies, could’ve been a rising star in the horror movie “The Fly” but sadly, she wasn’t born 1986.
She’s got great ancestors, her Mummy lives in New Guinea known to be the largest species in the Bulbophyllum Genera. She’s got humongous leaves and beautiful somewhat furry flowers, of a very dark velvety maroon. If you ever saw a Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis life and in flower.. you know it's best to stay away! Well unless you’re a fly and like the stink, pardon scent of decaying bodies.
Her father than is native to Sulawesi and Borneo. Bulbophyllum echinolabium produces beautiful large flowers, that do last very long. The flowers come in various colours and can range from white, mahogany sometimes dark burgundy. Having said that, you need to know that Bulbophyllum echinolabium is known for producing the most pungent aromas in its genus.
Our Queen of the flies does have the beautiful dark maroonish burgundy taint and the large showy leaves of her Mummy. The large star shaped flowers and even the cheeky dark velvet blood red lip - that rocks back and forth in a breeze, keeping to small admirers away that couldn’t properly pollinate, would certainly origin form her Father. As so the very long lasting beauty of her flowers.
The registration of this beautiful, yet unusual Queen of Flies, a primary hybrid, was in November 2011.
Are you are still scared ?
