Thank you so much for the support at my little green flower locker found on Warren Street, Wanaka.

I wanted to create a neighbourhood flowers spot to share farm fresh blooms that felt local for locals to swoop past on the weekends and grab a bunch for their kitchen table, to take over to a friend to say hey, swing by on their way to a dinner party as a thank you for having me, stroll past and scoop up as a congratulations.

What ever the reason I appreciate that you have come, purchased, messaged an enjoyed your blooms.

This is your heads up that they won’t be around much longer as the growing season comes to an end and the flowers disappear for the winter so enjoy the lost moments of this season and a heartfelt thank you from me for all the support.

As the days shorten, the light gets lower and the temps cool the flowers slow down so I am trying to make mental notes of what worked and what didn’t and soak up the last of their beauty before they are gone again till next year.

Here is a little behind the scenes planning and making of wedding florals for my friends wedding in Auckland in March.

I decided to share this little insight as many of you too are planning a destination wedding in Wanaka and starting to think about your florals.

Like you, this was as all new for me. Creating a floral installation, working remotely at a site unseen, using flowers I wasn’t familiar with or exactly sure what I was getting and had limited time on the ground to execute.

Scroll through to see the process I went through, including a few scenic shots….I had the most magical flight north from Queenstown to Auckland with beautiful weather across the country I even saw Mount Cook.

All of this was achieved with some great team work which doubled as a great catch up with who was on double duties as the celebrant and the bride.

Hollyhocks dancing in the breeze, these have been self seeding in the garden since I was a child.

I found recently seed packets I created as a child in a draw in the homestead, little hand made packets complete with tinfoil pocket of collected hollyhock seeds.

It’s the perfect time of year to be gathering seeds for next season, not all seed comes back true but a lot does. Why not turn it into a craft project to do with your kids over school holidays, a great way to get them outside and given them a science lesson around the cycles of natures.

Look and listen to nature, can you hear the hum of the bees in the background, the squawk of the birds, and see the bugs darting about, butterflies flying past. This is what a garden should look and sound like, full of life.

I don’t use any sprays on my plants, I rely on nature and the circle of life to keep things in check. A bug eats my plant, another bug or bird eats that bug. It’s not complicated and when it is all in balance it all works together to create a happy eco system.

As a plant gets stressed it can be more susceptible to bug damage so it is important to give your plants the best opportunity to thrive which can be a juggle in our harsh Central Otago environment especially when you are trying to grow things that would prefer lusher gentler climes!

Instead of reaching for the spray to fix the problem, consider the plants environment, it might be a simple fix. Is it stressed from temperature too hot, cold or frosts, lack of water or too much water, lack of nutrients, wrong position - consider the light it receives or maybe it is just at the end of its lifecycle.

Three cheers for the “Maids”, this was a bridesmaid bouquet that went out for a DIY wedding this week.

What a week of weather, crispy cool mornings, clear sunny skies and dusky evening light, the pick of the season to get married I would say!

This season I have had a few of my DIY brides opting to get some support with designing their own florals and I have designed l some of the elements for their wedding day.

I have no aspirations to move into full blown wedding and event floristry, I will leave that to the seasoned pros, we have some amazing talent in our region offering these services who I am lucky to get to work with by supplying flowers for their clients briefs.

However I do enjoy dipping my toe in at a small scale for those looking for an intimate offering of seasonal beauty, designing a few elements for their event.

This week asters were starting to flush so they were definitely the backbone of this wedding offering, dahlias have slowed down hugely but are still looking lovely and I found some other gems to put in the mix.
