Police are issuing a reminder to the Rodney community to be vigilant with items being stolen from building sites and new builds.

Waitematā North Police have seen an increase in Gas califonts being stolen recently.

Area Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant Roger Small says they are simple to remove and easy to on sell in places such as Facebook Marketplace.

“We are seeing an increase in the theft of these units, predominately from homes that are currently under construction.

“These homes are often easy to access as they are not yet properly secured, giving would be thieves an easy entrance.”

Potential prevention measures include but are not limited to:

-Installing a security bracket, which can be fitted into the back of the califonts and make it much harder to be removed. Such brackets can be purchased with the unit, or from most hardware shops for a small cost. “These brackets would significantly slow down offenders, making your property a less attractive target,” Senior Sergeant Small says.

- Install the califont as late in the building process as possible as an occupied dwelling is far less appealing to offenders.

- CCTV is a fantastic deterrent and investigative tool.

Top tips:
• Record serial numbers (either write it down or take a photo) – as we recover stolen property regularly.
• Is it too good to be true? Items sold online at a cheap price may be stolen property!
• Report offending to Police online
• Be vigilant – if you see suspicious activity call Police on 111

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

What’s worse than locking your keys inside your car, not locking your car and having your valuables stolen.

We know it's easy to forget, but removing or hiding your valuables is one of the best preventative actions you can take.

Police patrols are actively watching for any criminal activity around vehicles and we monitor crime hot spots, but the best prevention you can take is:

💸 Do not leave valuables (especially irreplaceable items) in vehicles – this reduces the appeal to offenders and can reduce harm if anything happens.
👀 If you need to leave items in your car, make sure they're hidden away to make your car less appealing
💡 Park vehicles off the street if able, or in well-lit and well-travelled areas.
📝 Keep track of serial numbers and identifying particulars to help Police return valuables if they are located.
🔐 Please remember to lock and alarm your vehicles.

Police are urging anyone who witnesses any suspicious activity to call Police on 111 immediately. Anyone who believes they have been a victim of crime should call Police on 111 if it is happening now, or on 105 (or police.govt.nz/use-105) if it has already happened.

Reports can also be made anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police have arrested a 57-year-old man last night outside a v**e store in Wairau Valley, North Shore Auckland after receiving a report of suspicious activity.

About 8.30pm, a man and a woman were seen allegedly taking products from a v**e store which was made insecure in the rising flood waters.

The offenders were observed putting a significant number of products into a van.

The man and woman were stopped at the scene by Police with the stolen goods in the van.

A search of the man’s vehicle showed a number of other stolen items from another commercial premises nearby which was also insecure as a result of the weather.

“This type of opportunist behaviour when people are just trying to deal with an emergency is pretty low.

The effect of burglary and theft is evident on small and big businesses as well – it’s selfish and thoughtless.”

The man will appear before the North Shore District Court facing burglary charges.

The woman has been issued a formal warning.

Call 111 in an emergency if something is happening right now, illegal or suspicious.

If it’s already happened you can provide information via the Police non-emergency number – call 105 or go online at 105.police.govt.nz
