Kakariki Coffee - a green oasis 🌷🍃🌼
An escape from the hard surfaces that surround CBD professionals. A breath of fresh air, bringing a lush retreat to a busy street.

Under a very tight timeframe with a conservative, start-up budget, we transformed the former Trade Kitchen’s early 2000s grey and red restaurant into a fresh, vibrant, welcoming, and successful café space for our client Thobias Joby.

What began as a traditional client-architect relationship has now evolved into something quite special. The design team approached the design holistically, even curating the cafe’s logo and branding.

Perched at the highest point of the Routeburn Track in Fiordland National Park, the Harris Saddle Shelter offers a welcome refuge when the weather closes in, or a safe place to stash packs before the side trip up Conical Hill. Fully exposed to wind, snow and alpine conditions, this is one of the most demanding locations on the track, so durability matters.

In 2024, one of the shelters was fully refurbished and reclad, ensuring it is ready to withstand many more harsh winters to come. Its distinctive alpine hut form isn’t just aesthetic, the steep profile is designed to manage heavy snowfall, helping the structure endure in this extreme environment.

Our associate, Lien, worked with Manu Feildel to create this out-there restaurant design in Sydney's World Square. 🦆🍔

Their design was a contemporary take on a 50s diner and by using colour, pattern and neon lighting, the space works in harmony with the "Duck In, Duck Out" branding. "It was the first project I'd ever done where branding and space were one and the same," Lien says, "that's what was so fun about it!"

Mini Huts!! We loved reading the latest Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand - FMC's Backcountry magazine article on Ian's miniature hut models - a devotion to Aotearoa's backcountry and the stories these huts hold.
It’s a reminder that they are so much more than shelter. They’re memory‑makers: cold nights made warm, storms waited out, friendships forged, tired legs forgiven.

As designers, it’s easy to focus on drawings and details but stories like this bring it back to why huts matter. They are shaped by decades of volunteer effort, tramping culture, and care. We're genuinely lucky to be part of that wider hut story, constantly inspired by the people who love and look after these buildings.

The article and magazine is well worth the read, a heartfelt celebration of the tramping community that keeps backcountry huts alive: https://fmc.org.nz/what-we-do/publications/backcountry/

We’ve had the privilege of designing over 90 backcountry huts across New Zealand and stories like this are why that work never gets old. ⛰️

Places that turn passing through into staying awhile. We deliver commercial interiors that feels human at any scale.

We want more public spaces where light is balanced, acoustics are calm, materials are warm and you can comfortably nestle in. Where it's clear to navigate and access is seamless so the best path is the same for everyone.

At Massey University - Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Tāwharau Ora – School of Veterinary Sciences, working under our sister brand Lab-works Architecture, a welcoming frontage invites students in, natural finishes pair with bold colour, and cultural narrative - Huia Tapere Nui by Reweti Arapere - anchors identity and wayfinding. The result is a place to meet, sit, talk and gather before heading to class.

Boutique character at scale.

This concept shows how a larger yield of townhouses can still feel individual: facade depth, material variation and a steady structural rhythm create richness without unnecessary complexity.

By establishing a repeatable framework rather than one-off moments, the design balances efficiency with identity, supporting buildability while elevating street presence, natural light and quality.

Design that scales, without losing soul.

Fantastic to see Mt Heale Hut refreshed and ready for another busy season on Aotea Great Barrier Island 👏
Huge credit to Department of Conservation, Backcountry Trust Aotearoa/New Zealand and the incredible volunteers who put in the hard mahi!
As the designers of Mt Heale Hut back in 2009, it's amazing to see Aotearoa's backcountry huts being so well cared for and maintained, for everyone to enjoy for years to come. 💛
