Congratulations to Elizabeth Cox!

We’re beyond thrilled that Mr Ward’s Map has won the BookHub Award for Illustrated Non-Fiction at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards!

The judges described Mr Ward’s Map as: ‘Innovative, engaging and inherently human. Mr Ward’s Map is a celebration of research, storytelling, and archives. Elizabeth Cox deployed one historic cartographic document as the foundation for a superbly written publication that bridges multiple world views and time periods — highlighting one source and how it resonates in the contemporary moment. Across 560 pages, Cox unpacks the 88 sheets of Mr Ward’s map, alongside carefully selected archival photography and illustrations. While anchored in Victorian Wellington, Cox presents a range of complex issues and histories that have universal reach. This skilfully interweaves impacts of colonial land alienation on tangata whenua, reveals imbalances and intersectional experiences of race, class and gender, and offers a reflection of societal changes, and what remains the same.’

Congratulations to Elizabeth and also to Jo Bailey, the creator of the book’s wonderful design.

Mr Ward’s Map is available from our website, BookHub and in all good bookstores.

Chris Thom of Chow Hill has written the definitive book on NZ Health Design history and naturally Bulleyment Fortune and predecessors appear. Recognition at last!

Mike Cronin assisted Chris by reviewing sections of the draft.

They are some of the largest and most prominent buildings in our cities and towns. Places we are all are likely to spend significant time, as family and patients, weak or upset,. So why are hospitals so often considered ugly and unfriendly?

Restoration of a house by the late, great Chris Brooke-White

The original clients get back a Wellington house designed by the late Chris Brooke-White, one of the great characters of the 1970s, in this project feature from 2008.

Kia ora,

As you may know, Bulleyment Fortune lives on at McKenzie Higham Architects (MHA) with John, Mike and Jacob from BFA happily at work there - and several Bulleyment Fortune projects continuing or completed under the MHA banner.

It being almost two years since Bulleyment Fortune closed, the website, which has been supported by MHA in the meantime, will be taken down soon. As a result we've updated the contact details and website link here on Facebook to direct you to McKenzie Higham https://www.mckenziehigham.co.nz/.

Tena kohe,

A big night for Bulleyment Fortune last night, as we won an award for our work at St Mary of the Angels.

As most of you will know, Bulleyment Fortune ceased as a practice in October last year following the loss of Denis Fortune, but in tribute to Denis the NZIA allowed the practice one more night in order to enter the 2019 Wellington Architecture Awards. A good way to go out.

Nga mihi
