⚠️ UPDATE | 21 April 6:30am
A state of emergency and red rain warning is still in effect for the Wellington region. Our crews have been working right through the night to respond to the weather and keep our city moving. Here’s the latest update:
🌉 BRIDGES
- All bridges in Lower Hutt are OPEN
- Follow Upper Hutt City Council for updates on Silverstream Bridge
🚧 ROAD CLOSURES
- Fairfield Ave – CLOSED
- Junction Street – CLOSED
- SH2 Kaitoke to Featherston, (Remutaka Hill) - CLOSED
All other local roads are OPEN. Please take extra care when travelling.
As part of the response Wellington Water have deployed pumping stations and crews to vulnerable relocations in Lower Hutt to assist with any surface flooding.
Due to bridge damage, SH2 is now CLOSED between Kaitoke and Featherston (Remutaka Hill). Road users are advised to delay travel if possible.
🏠 WELFARE SUPPORT
If you’re feeling unsure or need a safe place to go, support is available.
The following facilities are open and can provide device charging, hot drinks, needs assessments.
- Walter Nash Centre (Taitā) - Can also accommodate small domestic pets.
- Wainuiomata Marae
- Kōraunui Marae
Please note: all other Council facilities remain closed until further notice.
⚠️ CURRENT RISKS
️⚠️ Do not drive or walk through floodwater as it may be contaminated and contain debris.
⚠️ Keep an eye out for warning signs of landslides, including:
- Small slips, rock falls, or subsidence at the base of slopes
- Sticking doors or window frames
- Gaps where frames are no longer fitting properly
- Decks, steps, or verandas shifting or tilting away from the house
- New cracks or bulges in the ground, roads, footpaths, or retaining walls
- Tilting trees, fences, or retaining walls
If you notice any of these signs, move to a safe area and report it to 04 570 6666. If your life is at risk, call 111 immediately.
