Just one water meter remained unlocated and unread in the whole Whakatane District.. So who did they call.. 'The Eagle' Mr Fixit EBOP. Accompanied by my new sidekick 'FeistyPics' because Carly was unwell we headed off to the remotest part of the Ruatoki valley. Two crews had already been sent on this mission returning with their hands in the air.
I told Steph that if we are not back within 2 days you need to send the Army.
Maps, GPS, pick, proder, shovel, spade and new camo toilet tent we made our way up to the far reaches locating the indicated position of the said meter. Observing the feable attempts by the previous search parties a trench through the rocky ground was hacked by us to no avail. I had located this meter before as I read it last year so was not going to give up. It must be in a different position I thought walking about 150 m down the road checking several other meters including one not even on the books.. The Eagle NEVER gives up.
Next thing a holler from Feistypics who had scratched away at a pile of rotting grass clippings not far from where I had just been. and 120 meters from where it should have been, there was the little blue box which is now well marked.... I have to give Feistypics the credit for this one although I would have found it. eventually.. Now everyone at the Whakatane water department can sleep well knowing all meters are read and the Bills are on there way, so when you pay your Bill be mindfull that a couple of cents have gone to me to feed my family...
