Richard Gedye Ltd is an institution on the Whanganui building scene — the master painters & decorators have been making our local buildings more beautiful since waaaay back in ‘98!

At The Avenue, their team’s brushes touched pretty much every surface that’s painted or stained, which is quite a lot! They also took on the installation of the acoustic ceiling panels (not quite as simple as it might sound…).

We threw Richard three quick questions about their work on The Ave rebuild, and got three rapid-fire answers:

1. What part of your work on The Avenue are you most proud of?

It would be ceiling acoustics, the Autex Cubes.

2. Is there anyone from your team you’d like to highlight specially?

Site forming: James Regan.

3. When The Avenue opens, what would you love guests to notice?

It would be the open flow, once you’re walking in.

Calman Engineering is a Whanganui workshop specialising in bespoke metalwork, precision engineering and high quality custom fabrication – all pretty handy skills when it comes to designing and constructing a new bar!

We invited Abi Calman to give some background on their contribution to The Avenue, and she started by saying, “I don't know that we really did anything noteworthy.”

[just quietly, we beg to differ…]

“Rodney and Laurie, in conjunction with Kitchen Contours and Shane Stone Builders, made stainless steel beer alcoves. We made the hanging glass holder above the bar and the inserts for the planter boxes. We also made various brackets and internal bench frames.

Much of what we do involves structural supports to strengthen things like countertops which are then installed internally, so our work often isn't visible. For the Avenue project, Kitchen Contours brought us their ideas and drawings, and we made it work.

It’s always interesting and fun for us to work on a local project like this. A lot of what we do isn't seen by the public, so it was a nice change to work on a few different things.

Engineering always presents challenges, as we must devise ways to make ideas functional and realized!"

We’re kicking off a short series shining a light on some of the work done by local contractors on The Avenue Hotel Whanganui rebuild, where the restaurant, bar and conference facilities will soon be open to the public.

Some of the stuff we’ll be highlighting might not be immediately visible to guests – and that’s pretty much the point.

On a large and complex project like this, it’s all the little things that have come together over the years to make the space what it is – and it takes a lot of love, effort and skill to make it happen.

This series is one small way of recognising some of the awesome people and businesses who have put in the hard mahi! 💪

After a nearly three-year journey, the doors to the fully redesigned hospitality spaces at The Avenue Hotel in Whanganui are ALMOST ready to open and welcome guests again.

Since a devastating fire in 2023 took out the old facilities, the Black Pine team has been leading the redesign, guiding the rebuild, and working alongside the clients and an incredible group of local contractors who have done amazing work to give the place a new life.

We’re really honoured to have been involved, immensely proud of what’s been achieved together and can't wait for the public to come have a look!

Over the next few days/weeks, we'll share a few posts to recognise some of the people and businesses that have made this project a success ❤️

Today the Black Pine team took a trip to Taupō to catch up with some awesome clients we've been working with over the past couple of years to design and build a new high-performance Passivhaus.

We're really chuffed with how it's turned out, and are so honoured to have been able to help create a healthy, super energy-efficient home that will look after this family for generations ❤️

Little blast of colour to end the week — and a special shout-out to Sam Moore, Garden Designer and Consultant who helped us out late last year when this beautiful garden was still concrete, grass and weeds.

It was his extra direction around ground prep and seed selection (not to mention a general sprinkle of confidence!) that really helped the wildflower project get off to a winning start. Six months later, this little patch is still flourishing and bringing an incredible amount of joy to the neighbourhood 🩷

HUGE shout out to NZ Gardener magazine for the print feature on our little suburban wildflower experiment! ❤️

Despite the recent stormy weather and cool change in the air, we're still flush with colour, nice smells and good vibes. No lawn, no mowing, no regrets! 🌻🌼🌷🪻

PS: we're still giving away seeds - just come knocking (or you're welcome to collect your own).

There’s a lot to like about the rustic chic of neatly stacked firewood. But there’s sooooo much more to like about not having to deal with firewood at all!!

If you’re keen to future-proof your cosy winters — as in, all of them, for the rest of your life, and generations to come — have a chat to us about how high-performance Passivhaus design will improve the energy efficiency, running costs, comfort, and indoor air quality of your home.

With a solid plan, we’ll get you locked up tight and super-comfy all year round.

And no more chopping firewood.

Ever.
