Winter : persistant rain and cold Easterly winds. Camellias: loving it. This is Camellia hybrid Night Rider, bred here in Whangarei by the late Os Blumhardt. See this bloom, and lots more, at either the Whangarei Camellia Show on 10th August; or the National Camellia Show in Palmerston North on 24th August.

Well, it's been a while since my last post; life gets in the way. But the Camellias have kept flourishing and flowering regardless of myself -- so it's good to look forward to the Camellia show season:

You don't need a large or excessively flamboyant Camellia flower to illustrate the attraction they create. This 50 to 60mm wide beauty was on display at the 2021 NZ National Camellia Show.
What a buttonhole it would make for a formal evening! And, if you'll forgive me for a play on its name -- it's electrifying.

If your name is Anita, you have a beautiful Camellia named just for you. Enjoy your day.

It's been a couple of months since my last post on this page, but the plants keep growing regardless of my neglect. In May last year I set out to demonstrate (at the local Camellia Society propagation workshop) the myth or otherwise of germinating seeds in a banana. 3 seeds were sown, 2 x C. oleoifera and 1 x unknown. Only the unknown one has made the grade, some 8 months later, nestled in black shrunken banana flesh. Neither really proving, nor dis-proving, the theory. Bananas will always be more expensive than potting mix. See the photos for the progression.

Another Camellia bloom that I spotted on Facebook -- this one only known by it's code number which is GM148, so I speculate that it was bred by Grant Montana. But in which country? I cannot say. But it is certainly an eye-catcher.

Help required! I planted this Camellia in my father-in-laws garden about 35 years ago, but I've forgotten the name (of the plant, not the father-in-law). Is it Camellia Wilamina? or something else? You're invited to suggest your identifications of it. By the way, the suggestions of white colouration are only caused by strong sunlight brushing the tips of some pink petals.

The late Neville Haydon, despite being what many of us would think of as "age-enhanced", was no stranger to social media. Here's a post he made in 2012 ( see the date in his post) in which he shows us one of his most beautiful Camellia creations, C. Desmond Haydon.

A lovely sun-kissed Camellia bloom, in a garden near Dargaville. But although I was given a map of the garden, with all the bushes named, I forgot exactly where I was when I took the photo, and so I can't tell you what this variety is. Sorry.

One of the more mundane behind-the-scenes jobs at the recent National Show was checking that the silverware was up to scratch. Yes, it was my job to polish the Duncan and Davies trophy cup, so that it shone silver instead of slightly gold under the artificial lighting in the hall. Whew!
Then Derek and Jenny won it -- the single bloom is just one of three different varieties in their entry display.

Do you find modern art difficult to interpret? Well, here's Camellia Modern Art, always known to have red and white streaks, and some marbling, but in quite variable ratios. The flowers are always anemone form, with a dome of petaloids in the center; but each bloom slightly different in colour. This one, shown at the 2023 Whangarei Camellia Show, has a solid chunk of red on one side.
