Interest Piece Week 4 - Jacks Point Part 3. The deep, recessed windows accentuate the solid construction of the building, portraying a sense of permanence and connection with the historic buildings and the landscape of the region. The details of the house are the foundation for ensuring all components come together cohesively; it’s important to consider early on in the design.

Interest Piece Week 4 - Jacks Point Part 2. The concept is based on “honest” architecture that is grounded in its environment – crisp, clean lines, constructed from material extracted from the site and sourced within the region. The home is comprised of three parts: the linear gallery, the living wing (a rectangular form), and the bedroom area (a square shape).

Interest Piece Week 4 - Jacks Point Part 1. Located between the tussock-covered hills and the manicured fairways of Jacks Point Golf Course, this home embodies the local environment in its design. It is situated on a promontory whose axis aligns with the landscape’s key features: Lake Wakatipu to the west, the Remarkables to the east, and Peninsula Hill to the north, which hides Coronet Peak. Stick around for Part 2!

Is architecture an art? Can art be architecture? There are many great examples of buildings that certainly fit the sculptural and emotive aspect of an art piece. One instantly thinks of Sagrada Família by Antoni Gaudí or Frank Gehry’s Concert Hall in LA. But what if we can shift our perspective on contemporary architecture? If art is an experience created by someone’s expression of skill and imagination, can our everyday buildings become a piece of art?

Recently, Grant has been looking more deeply into the relationship between architecture and sustainable living through his study of permaculture. As architects, we need to understand how design shapes the way people live, how we use resources, grow food, manage waste, and connect with the land around us. Permaculture offers a way of thinking that feels increasingly relevant, one built on observation, balance, and respect for natural systems. As part of Grant’s current studies, he has begun developing this high-level concept for a new family home in Auckland. Stay tuned for more.

A building may look well-worn, but all it needs is a new look! This teaching block for young tamariki utilises a fresh paint system where two main colours are used to not only break down the large faces on the envelope, but also freshen up the design. The pops of yellow add intrigue and excitement to the once disused building. How do you like it?

Interest Piece Week 3: Stand Tū Māia Northland Children’s Village Part 3 - Each room was throughfully designed to meet the needs of staff and kids, but also to reflect the purpose of each building and surrounding environment. The colour pallete has fun bright colours to encourage creativity in learnning, cool neutral tones in spaces for relaxing, pops of colour throughout the natural finishes of the village. All tie into aspects of the local flora and fauna in Northland.

Interest Piece Week 3: Stand Tū Māia Northland Children’s Village Part 2 - This project features four key buildings, each function represented by an individual, minimal form and tied together by the central courtyard and cladding. This design allows for fucntionality and focus on the tamariki in the village, rather than flashy design.

Interest Piece Week 3: Stand Tū Māia Northland Children’s Village Part 1 - Our latest project, a new purpose-built village for Stand Tū Māia. The layout of the buildings resembles a mother’s outstretched arms, designed to reflect the values of Stand, keeping whānau together and special care for each child. It was a privilege to work alongside so many talented individuals and professionals to complete this project.
