I have worked/lived throughout New Zealand; I may not have kept the best company at times, however, generally they came through at important times. Auckland, Northland, Far North, Hokianga, Dargaville, Matakohe, Langs Beach, Mangawai, Badleys Beach, North Shore, Whangaparoa, Symonds Street, Rotorua, Horotu, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington, Waiheke Island, and I get fairly aware quickly as to who is a good tradesman/person or not.
One guy on site, who after a few generic conversations, I gently requested whether he was a qualified chippie,
'No, I worked as a hammer hand whilst I was training in pottery in Dome Valley.'
Okay, thanks for your honesty. ( Later, not his responsibility, I found out that that particular house had to have a ranch slider removed to get a double bed into the master bedroom).
Happy Days.....
Dad scored the Keith Hay Homes contract in Whangarei early into his Northland tenure, and these guys were the first to take up horizontal fixing, as it fitted into their transportable protocols.
Any squash player worth their salt knows the backhand stroke is strongest, and we would stop horizontal fixing with that backhand technique. Vertical fixing, we would start in a room at the door, working left to right, after the ceiling.... horizontal fixing, we worked right to left from the door, and in K.H.H. there were no ceilings for us.
(Gordon Ball and Brian Atkinson leaving flawless fixing for us)
I mention this, as even though Ronnie retired @79, he could still put in a reasonable half day on sight because of the plasterboard being horizontally fixed - his overhead work was a bit stilted due to his shoulders, however, noone minds covering for an absolute legend!
Unfortunately, when you have been taught by one of the best, your experiences are colored with the knowledge of people trying to make excuses for poor performances, lack of credibility, passing off abject mistakes for acceptable chaos???
Cindy???
