The Cephalotus population at this iconic cliff site was not as nice as on my last visit due to significant natural erosion. These cliffs are mainly formed out of unconsolidated sandy peat and easily crumble into the inlet during storm activity. This should not be taken as a misguided justification for poaching under the pretence that the plants are quote-unquote "doomed to die". The exposed and bare seepage walls result in flowering and seedling recruitment rates that are much higher than plants in typical swamp-side niches, which normally rely on natural fire cycles to clear competing vegetation and free up the habitat for reproduction. The number of plants at both seedling and adult stages at this site is a testament to the species' success in thriving at this unstable but stunning location.
