Travel Diaries: New mini series with the random little stories & adventures that you can only experience when travelling. 😅
We hope you enjoy!

Episode one:
During our Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, there was very little in the way of toilets. Our guide advised up to quietly sneak off and use the “Inca Toilet” should we need to while hiking between camps. While hiking through the jungle on Day 3, there was absolutely nowhere to go- a narrow path with a sheer drop on one side & mountain on the other. The opportunity eventually came when we met a family who live in the mountains. I’d 1 Sol (£0.35) to use their toilet. After a little hike up the mountain & away from the group, this is what I was met with.
What would you do?

A little delayed but here is day 15. We plan to keep posting regular tie bits of@our travels. There’s just a lot to process & go through but we’re slowly settling back into every day life.

This was quite a hectic day filled with adventure & fun, we loved it!

Day 14

Our second day en route to Machu Picchu & our biggest day! Climbing to 4,600m at the beautiful Salkantay pass then walking down to camp, covering around 22km (13.6miles approx). We experienced extreme cold & we’re grateful for carrying our winter layers. Hearing avalanches crashing in the background while meditating & part taking in a spiritual ceremony is an experience we’ll never forget.

Day 13…

The start to an epic 5 day journey to Machu Picchu 🦙🗻

Not a lot to say other than altitude is no joke! 😅 Luckily we had great company to keep us going 🙂

Career Break Day 12

Today we explored Cusco City a little. We got our 10 day tourist tickets and started with a couple of the nearby Inca Archeological sites. It’s really impressive how they moved these massive rocks and sculpted them to fit together perfectly!

We got our briefing for the Salkantay, which we will do in the next 5 days, and we got to meet our group and tour guide. Celebrations across Cusco seemed to be happening all day. We’re not entirely sure what it was for but someone mentioned it was a celebration for being kept safe during the recent earthquakes. Whatever the reason, it was great fun and boy do the Peruvians know how to celebrate.

Career Break Day 11:

Today was essentially a travel day, but instead of going 4 hours back to Arequipa then 12 hours to Cusco, we opted for the 4M tour that ones a direct bus 3 time a week. A bit more expensive but worth the time and energy saved.
As you can expect it was nt anything special. We stopped at a mirador and a couple other places before heading to the most touristy place for a buffet lunch. Equipped with Jam sandwiches, crisps and nuts, we opted to not eat there but rather enjoy the fresh air just outside.
It still took about 10 hours and we did learn a few interesting things along the way.
We are very excited to be in Cusco, our main purpose for coming is in just a few days and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Career break Day 10:

Our final day of hiking and it was a tough one! Over 1,200m of elevation and no shade to break from the heat! We thought we were well acclimatised but the last few hundred metres of elevation were tough going. Spectacular views along the way and some more condor sightings made it all worthwhile.
Once back in Chivay (on a local Andalucia bus) we did some essentials before packing up ahead of our long journey tomorrow!

Career break Day 9

Day 2 of Colca Canyon: Llahuar - San Juan de Chocco.

This was probably our favourite day. Mostly because of the varied terrain & landscapes.

We started early to avoid the heat and it was so worth it! Walking up through the farmland we saw our first hummingbird! A small but beautiful & strong creature! I was so in awe admiring this stunning bird that I was unfortunately too slow on the camera to capture it.

We also made a friend who is inspiring & on a wonderful journey. :)

Career Break Day 8

The first day of hiking Colca Canyon. What a treat! We started at about 06:30 to get the bus from Chivay to Cabanaconde. We made a couple stops along the way and finally started shortly before 10:00. This meant hiking in the heat of the day which wasn’t fun. The trail is a little technical but nothing too difficult, the heat was our biggest challenge. The views were breath taking (not just because of the altitude)- there’s something unique about being here in dry season and taking the landscape in.
The hot pools were a welcomed break and so was the cold sugar of Inca cola (although in all honesty one to share would have sufficed). Our accommodation was epic with stunning views and the room was comfortable. Mad that it on,y cost £13 and included breakfast!
