Let's talk about Extrafloral Nectaries (EFN's).
We all know flowers generally produce nectar, that sweet secretion highly coveted by pollinators such as bees, ants, and flies. But did you know that certain aroids also produce nectar, specifically on their leaves and petioles? Hence the term "extrafloral"--outside the flower.
If you keep your philodendrons outside, you may notice ants setting up shop around the area. They mean no harm. In fact, your philodendron is secreting nectar specifically to attract these ants. Why? Because it's a win-win situation. Ants love the nectar and, in return, they defend the plant from pests.
You can choose to wipe away these droplets of nectar if you don't want ants. When these droplets dry up, they can leave unsightly burn-like marks on the leaves. This may prompt you to start panicking and get the Dithane spray ready, but you can rest assured that your plant remains healthy and happy. So next time you see these yellow spots on your philodendrons, don't panic! It's just your plant doing well :)
