Kate’s Bakery at The Marketplace Ayala Center Cebu

Small projects deserve the same care and intention as large ones. Guided by this belief, the design responds thoughtfully to the site’s constraints.

Located at the center of the food hub within the Marketplace grocery, the space required visual transparency to surrounding shops while accommodating a large existing column near the middle of the lease area.

The layout zones the selling and baking areas using layered partitions. A series of arches integrates the existing column, creating visual continuity while maintaining openness. Glass partitions with thin black frames unobtrusively enclose the baking area.

A 45-degree “cut corner” display replaces the typical 90-degree corner, encouraging a more fluid and natural flow for shoppers—connecting both sides of the display into one seamless retail experience.

Layer House is a private residence located in a quiet subdivision in Cebu, Philippines. The house is defined by two volumes layered on top of each other—the lower level contains the shared, communal spaces, while the upper level houses the more private, personal areas. Veiled by ‘barcode screens’—composed of vertical aluminum tubes arranged in both horizontal and vertical orientations—this transitional layer between exterior and interior creates a dynamic filter for light that functions as both a shading and privacy device, while still preserving a sense of transparency from within and openness to the exterior.

The Mill Lifestyle Cafe at Ayala Center Cebu, a bakery inspired by the windmills that grind grain into flour, derives its name from this age-old tradition. Driven by a passion for artisan baking, the design seeks to capture rustic heritage while celebrating the artistic craft of baking.

Located within a commercial mall with a long, linear layout, the challenge was to create a cohesive space that wouldn’t feel fragmented by its length. The design solution moves away from the typical approach of defining space with horizontal (ceiling) and vertical (wall) planes. Instead, it introduces a single, continuous shape—the barrel vault—to define the space. This vault is then carved to accommodate practical spaces and utilities. The result is a unified space defined by the barrel, spanning from end to end.
