A Modern Tropical Filipino Abode 🌱🇵🇭
Showcasing Filipino Culture and Craftsmanship through Art and Design

Designing this abode for a Filipino couple became an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of Filipino values, traditions, and the way we truly live and gather as a family.

The layout moves away from the conventional — thoughtfully shaped instead around how Filipinos naturally receive guests, celebrate milestones, and spend time together. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by lush tropical landscaping and a generous receiving space at the heart of the home.

At its center is an open kitchen with a bar, seamlessly connected to a communal dining table that accommodates up to 20 guests — reflecting the Filipino love for shared meals and meaningful conversations.

The lounge area features a modern interpretation of the traditional duyan — a space designed for rest, gentle movement, and comfort. Inspired by how our elders once embraced naturally breezy spaces (presko) to relax while keeping mosquitoes away, it brings nostalgia into a contemporary setting.

And of course, no Filipino gathering feels complete without music and entertainment. The home integrates centralized speakers, spaces for television and karaoke, and even showcases the owners’ personal collection of paintings — making the house not only a place of living, but a reflection of Filipino warmth, creativity, and togetherness.

Through carefully curated local materials, tropical elements, craftsmanship, and art, the home becomes a modern expression of Filipino identity — rooted in culture, yet designed for contemporary living.

A Modern Tropical Filipino Abode 🇵🇭
Showcasing Filipino Culture and Craftsmanship through Art and Design

Designing this abode for a Filipino couple became an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of Filipino values, traditions, and the way we truly live and gather as a family.

The architecture embraces openness, natural ventilation, and seamless indoor-outdoor living — principles deeply rooted in traditional homes, thoughtfully adapted for contemporary living. Notable Filipino craftsmanship is thoughtfully expressed through woodworks, weaving and carved elements reinterpreted in a modern way.

Throughout the home, traditional Filipino ventilation techniques were thoughtfully integrated into the design — from espejo clerestory openings that allow natural light and airflow to pass through the spaces, to bintanang capiz expressed through a series of checkerboard wooden-framed windows, and persiana or slanted wooden louvers that encourage ventilation while providing privacy and shade.

The architectural landscapes and pond further reflect the Filipino way of life — deeply connected to nature, simplicity, and livelihood. Inspired by the tranquility of provincial living, the outdoor spaces were designed to evoke a sense of calm, familiarity, and harmony with the environment. Lush tropical planting, natural materials, and water elements create an atmosphere that feels both grounding and restorative — reminiscent of how Filipino homes once coexisted closely with the land, water, and surrounding landscape.

Continuing the soft white palette and subtle lighting, the powder room is designed with purpose in every detail—
where accessibility, comfort, and beauty come together as one seamless, thoughtful experience.

From tissue to hand soap, to the waste bin and skirting, every detail has been carefully considered to elevate the experience while providing comfort to each user.

Adding to the overall design, elements that reflect a sense of place—most notably through the capiz custom-art, subtly grounding the space in culture and context.
