Alcoffea Tiles recently competed in the Creative Business Cup Global Finals 2019 - The Bright Event which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 1-2.

The team won in the Creative Business Cup Nationals during the Global Entrepreneurship Week Philippines last November 2018 and was chosen to represent the Philippines on the Creative Business Cup Global Finals 2019 where they competed with over 60 countries and was chosen as one of the 14 semi-finalists.

Alcoffea Tiles is a start-up company which produces "Coffee Tiles" or decorative clay tiles that are made from coffee waste. The tiles are hand made by artisans and have enhanced insulating and deodorizing properties, they are also coffee-scented, cost-efficient and eco-friendly.

What makes us different?

1. Consumers are now part of the creative process as the tiles are customizable. - As the consumer, you do not longer have to choose over tons of pre-designed tiles in the market because coffee tiles are hand-made by artisans and designed by YOU. Tiles would no longer be just built for aesthetics but will be used to tell one's story.

2. The tiles are value driven, in fact, the team found inspiration from the farmers and locals in Amadeo, Cavite, the coffee capital of the Philippines. - The farmers are losing interest due to low income and climate change. The team, therefore, aims to provide more jobs for the locals by using two methods: first, by buying a certain percentage of coffee waste from the locals and second, hiring people from the same town to work for the company.

The team has created a new formulation for decorative clay tiles in order to provide a cheaper alternative to clay which is used to produce traditional clay tiles. The tiles are patented under the Philippine Law.

How Do We Make It?

Coffee tiles are created through a unique formulation and they undergo a similar process as normal clay tiles.

1. Collection - We collect the grounds from different suppliers in Amadeo, Cavite, the known coffee capital of the Philippines. We believe that we are able to uplift the community by generating jobs, supporting the local coffee farmers and by encouraging Filipinos to dispose of coffee grounds properly.

2. Molding and Drying - The tiles are created through a unique formulation. The tiles are designed and are air-dried before firing to enhance its mechanical properties.

3. Firing - The third step is the firing process wherein the tiles are fired inside a kiln up to a certain temperature. This process is crucial to make sure that the tiles reach their maximum mechanical capacity.

4. Inspection and Quality Assurance - The tiles are inspected to make sure that they are free from flaws and cracks before they are delivered to the customers. At Alcoffea Tiles, we make sure that we are able to provide the right value to our customers through our products and service. Quality is one of the core competencies of the company.

5. Delivery and Distribution - Finally, the tiles are separated from each other by using a divider in order to avoid friction and possible dents before they are secured in a box. The tiles will undergo a final inspection before they are packed and delivered to customers.
