How to plant Kamagong?

Here are a few tips to remember.

1. Prepare your seed bed. Keep a one-meter radius from other vegetation.
2. Dig a plant hole with dimensions of at least 20cm x 20cm x 20cm. Upon placing the Mabolo seed, fill the hole with top or garden soil.
3. As the seedlings grow, use a mister or a small watering can to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Let the soil dry slightly between watering.
4. Seedlings need a lot of light. If you're temporarily growing in a window, choose a south-facing exposure. Rotate the pots regularly to keep plants from leaning into the light.
5. Lastly, remember to plant Mabolo seeds in groups. This ensures good pollination to make the trees bear fruits in the future.
6. Seedlings grow very fast when in soil. The good thing about Mabolo is that it is rarely fertilized and seems to need no protective spraying. It’s that easy.

With its scientific name Dillenia philippinensis, this plant is also known as Katmon, Philippine Dillenia and Elephant apple. It is native to Philippines and used for urban greening. But did you know that it is also used for many things?

1.) Mix the fruit with sugar or the fruit decoction is used as a cure for cough.
2.) The pounded fruit is used for cleansing the hair.
3.) Use the fruits, flowers and young shoots as a flavoring for sour fish soup or as what we love: Sinigang
4.) In Sabah, the paste of pounded young leaves or stem bark is applied on wounds and swellings.
