Succulent of the Week

Pachyphytum compactum
'Little Jewel'

Pachyphytum compactum is an attractive succulent with short, stout stem up to 6 inches (15 cm) long, that often branch towards the base and hold rosettes with many cylindrical, up to 1.2 inches (3 cm) long, light green to grey-white leaves with heavy white veins and deep purple tips. The inflorescence is up to 1 foot (30 cm) tall. The flowers are pale yellow in the center and the rest of the flower is pinkish orange.

Pachyphytum tolerates high heat and intense sunlight. As with most Crassulaceae, Pachyphytum can tolerate (and even appreciated) poor soil conditions, so long as it is well draining. Pachyphytum can thrive in full or partial sunlight.

Allow the soil to dry out before watering, and be careful to avoid getting water on the leaves. If you are unsure when to water your Pachyphytum, watch the lowermost leaves for signs of drying and water them then. Pachyphytum is FAR more likely to survive under-watering than over-watering. The thick fleshy leaves will appear wilted and a bit “under-full” when they need water.

Succulent of the Week

Astrophytum asterias (a.k.a. Sea Urchin Cactus or Sand Dollar) is an extremely flat barrel cactus with unique and remarkably beautiful form and no typical covering of spines, but with tiny speckled tuft of hairs less than pinhead-sized. It produces large yellow flowers with orange throats often larger than the plant itself. The common name comes from its resemblance to sea urchin without spines.

It is a solitary (unless damaged) perennial succulent growing deep seated just flat to the ground surface. In cultivation plants may have a spherical to columnar shape.

Watering: Requires careful and regular watering whenever the surrounding terrain is dry to keep its compact shape.

Sun exposure: Light shade to full sun. Its color tends to be richer and darker when grown in light shade.

Propagation: Primarily via seeds although there are specimens grown to produce offsets after coring.
