CABARROGUIS, Quirino (PIA) โ The province of Quirino has reached a major milestone in its agricultural export drive after shipping 1.2 tons of ube (purple yam) powder to Japan this April, the largest single export volume recorded to date, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Quirino.
Provincial Director Rowena Mayangat said the shipment, facilitated by the Quirino Young Entrepreneurs Association (QYEA), underscores the provinceโs growing competitiveness in the global market and highlights the increasing demand for locally processed ube products.
With the latest delivery, QYEA has completed seven export shipments to Japan, bringing total export volume to more than four tons and generating approximately P4.4 million in cumulative sales.
โThe initiative has directly benefited over 500 local farmers in the province,โ Mayangat said, noting that the export success is anchored on the Ube Development Project, a multi-agency initiative aimed at strengthening Quirinoโs agricultural value chain, improving product quality, and expanding market access for local producers and processors.
She added that the project is the result of collaboration among DTI Region 2, the DTI Quirino Provincial Office, QYEA, Quirino State University, the Provincial Government of Quirino, and the Department of AgricultureโCagayan Valley Integrated Agricultural Laboratory.
โThe Jabes ube powder underwent a year-long product development process with support from experts in design and food technology. Enhancements included improved branding, packaging, and labeling, as well as compliance with international quality standards through rigorous product testing and sensory evaluation,โ Mayangat said.
She said these efforts ensured that Quirinoโs ube powder meets global export requirements and remains competitive in the international market.
Mayangat emphasized that the milestone demonstrates the potential of Quirinoโs local industries to compete globally while providing sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers.
โAs global demand for ube continues to rise, the province remains committed to scaling up production, maintaining high product standards, and strengthening partnerships to sustain inclusive economic growth,โ she added. (OTB/TCB/PIA-2, Quirino/Photos courtesy of DTI Quirino)
