10 Tips for Having a Better Home Security System. AGAINST INTRUDERS.

No matter where you live, the right security system can be a significant asset. Bad things can happen anywhere, even in the nicest neighborhoods in gated communities, which makes taking the proper approach to security a must. With these ten tips for getting a better home security system, you can be sure that you and your family will have the protection you deserve.

1. Keep your locks updated

Despite the perception, locks aren't forever. As soon as a door or window lock ceases to function properly, have it fixed or replaced. Intruders know what signs to look for in a poorly protected home.

2. Update new property

When you move to a new property, be aware of the status of your property and take precautionary measures, such as changing the alarm and garage door codes and replacing the locks. After all, you never know whom the previous owners gave information to.

3. Keep wiring hidden

Many home security systems rely on wires run outside. Seasoned burglars know this, and all it takes is one well-placed snip to leave your home vulnerable. Try to ensure that all wiring is done inside, and keep all outdoor wires concealed.

4. Never let your home look vacant

Virtually all robberies happen in a vacant home, making it important to create some semblance of life. Set your lights to turn on at certain times using timers, get your neighbors to collect your newspaper, park a car in your driveway, and make sure there are motion sensors in your home.

5. Don't hide a key outside

Millions of Americans hide spare keys in planters, under doormats, or in the mailbox, making these locations a good bet for burglars. Instead, give an extra key to a neighbor or friend to keep in case you lock yourself out.

6. Install deadbolts or secondary locks

One lock is good, but two locks are better. Install deadbolts or additional reinforced locks on all your exterior doors to provide an extra level of protection in the event that trouble comes calling.

7. Choose solid, reinforced doors

Stylish doors with windows may be attractive, but they aren't great for home security. Instead, choose a door that is solid wood or one reinforced with steel to keep your home from being an easy target.

8. Keep entryways well lit

A dark door is an easy target. Install lights above your front door, garage, and any other entrances to dissuade an intruder from standing on your stoop.

9. Make sure your windows are included in the security system

Doors aren't the only way intruders can enter your home. Make sure all your windows, even those on the second floor, are wired into your home's security system to reduce the chance that a break-in can occur without your knowledge.

10. Choose interior door hinges

Most people never think about the placement of hinges, but that doesn't mean a burglar won't. It's very easy to slide the pins out of exterior hinges, leaving your home wide open to intruders. Instead, keep your hinges inside. The right approach to home security can make the difference between a safe, secure residence and a devastating robbery. If you'd like to take action to improve your home security system, our team will be happy to show you what we have to offer.
