Regenerative against Degenerative: Shared findings and experience over the years

Typical development formulas often destroy the ambiance of natural settings because they are poorly designed, with "efforts" spent on style, features, frills, and extras without any understanding of the actual design requirements. Regenerative Architecture for Agro-Eco Development explores the potential of built environments to enhance natural settings.

Regenerative Architecture identifies and merges the significance of environment, people and economy. By applying Regenerative Architecture principles, fundamentally agrarian cities and municipalities can develop towards a more positive paradigm. These principles include: (1) integration to landscape, (2) bold ecology, (3) intelligent construction, (4) intelligent limit, (5) culture, and (6) place while also considering several variables such as waste, water, and pollution management, impact of building materials and construction technology, energy management, water management, and relationship between people and site.

Unfortunately, such approaches can be "too idealistic" for many. But through professional practice and stewardship, we can slowly build a countermagnet against degenerative developments and move towards a holistic future.

P.S. Sharing some great views from 2024-2025 sites before the year ends.

Approach: Filipino Values and Communal Living
Location: Iguig, Cagayan
Status: Contract Document Phase

Project: Four Bedroom Bungalow with Roof Deck
Principle: Symbiotic Architecture
Approach: Permaculture, Ilocano Lifestyle and Cultural Motif, Tropical Design and Organic Building Systems
Location: City of Ilagan, Isabela
Status: Design Development Phase
Scope: Comprehensive Design

Located in the remote highlands of the City of Ilagan, with no power, water, sewer, or telecom connections, the project opted for a getaway place for agrarian development, supporting users’ farming lifestyle and allowing them to live in an organic environment.

The house design includes 100% passive cooling, natural lighting, a 100% off-grid solar system for electricity, and a deep well for water. Integrated in the design are healthy organic building applications, such as:
• Rainwater harvesting integrated with a drip-irrigation system for horticulture purposes
• Five-pot natural water filtration system for potable water
• Gravel-sand-coal septic tank and reed bed water filtration system for blackwater treatment
• Movable ‘gabion wall’ serving as plant boxes and cavity wall for thermal insulation
• Unpainted interior walls for lower emissions
• Locally sourced materials and craftwork for house beautification.

Living in such a setting fosters a deep connection to nature, inspiring a sense of harmony and encouraging sustainable lifestyle choices:
1. Financial Health Benefits:
• High capital cost but without monthly utility bills

2. Physical and Physiological Health Benefits:
• Boosts Immune System – increases the number and activity of natural killer (NK) cells, which help fight illness by inhaling phytoncides from plants.
• Accelerates Recovery – exposure to nature can accelerate recovery from illness.
• Improves Cardiovascular Health – lowers blood pressure and heart rate.
• Lowers Stress Hormone – reduces the production of cortisol (stress hormone)

3. Mental and Psychological Health Benefits:
• Improves mood – reduces negative feelings like anger, fatigue, and confusion while increasing feelings of happiness and vigor.
• Stress and Anxiety Reduction – exposure to nature promotes a sense of tranquility and mindfulness.
• Helps with depression – can have preventive effects on depression and improve overall mood.
• Boosts Creativity – disconnecting from digital devices and modern life distractions while in nature can boost creativity and problem-solving abilities by up to 50%.
• Enhances Concentration – immersing in nature can help restore mental clarity, improve focus, memory, and attention, which is especially helpful for those with attention fatigue or conditions like ADHD.

The design of the symbiotic farmhouse creates a living environment where the inhabitants, structure, and nature coexist in mutual harmony, improving well-being for all.

Project: Single Attached Bungalow
Principle: Biophilic Architecture
Approach: Biophilia, Passive Design, Environmental Stewardship, and Sensory Design
Location: Alcala, Cagayan
Status: Schematic Design Phase
Scope: Regular Design

Sustainability is nothing but achieving comfort with the least energy required.

Tucked in a vegetative site, the existing trees dictated the program for the house to look like boulders in the garden, with each room gifted with green views, creating a tranquil ambiance that invites a sense of peace and belonging: cultivating trees into gardens, a soundscape of chirping birds, and blissful interaction with birds and butterflies.

An Elysium that allows homeowners to practice their love of gardening, creating a strong indoor-outdoor connection on almost a spiritual level—a home designed by the trees, proving that nature and manmade developments can exist in harmony.

Project: Three-Storey Apartment Building
Principle: Microarchitecture
Approach: Fractal Planning and Environmental Psychology
Location: Tuguegarao City, Cagayan
Status: Contract Document Phase
Scope: Comprehensive Design

As urban density and living costs increase over the years, the volume and affordability problems are developing, especially in cities such as Tuguegarao.

The 'Compartments' scheme comprises 16 'Unit Blocks', enabling residents to adapt their home's configuration to changing school, work, or overall life situations. Through interstitial spaces, a combined 'Basic Unit' of 6 sqm transforms into a 'Studio Unit' of 12 sqm, a combined 'Studio Unit' becomes a 'Group Unit' of 24 sqm, and a combined 'Group Unit' morphs into a 'Family Unit' of 48 sqm, demonstrating its flexible design.

Occupants can either claim a single space or, if a couple or friends wish to live together, recombine the blocks to create larger configurations. The scheme introduces a new typology that extends the limits of the apartment unit to integrate fractal planning and interstitial spaces.

Project: Three-Storey Renovation
Principle: Neuro-Architecture
Approach: Geometry, Phenomenology, and Environmental Psychology
Location: Sta. Mesa, Manila
Status: Completed
Scope: Comprehensive Design

A renovation project focusing on tiny living, turning restrictions into opportunities.

Urban life of small living spaces, fast-paced routines, and stressful work environments can lead to marginalization, contributing to mental health issues and a reduction in social and physical opportunities, especially for the working class.

The design proposes renovating a confined space within a limited budget to create a comfortable living environment for a family of five on a 3-meter-by-3-meter plot, achieved by analyzing ergonomic activities within egocentric spaces, leading to the segregation of multimodal and hierarchical space programs.

Project: Four Bedroom Bungalow
Principle: Filipino Architecture
Approach: Filipino Values and Communal Living
Location: Tumauini, Isabela
Status: Contract Document Phase
Scope: Comprehensive Design

Renovation designed to accommodate two nuclear families within a traditional extended-family setup, highlighting cultural relevance and realistic needs.

A newlywed couple living with their parents exemplifies a Filipino tradition rooted in 'Utang na Loob,' or the debt of gratitude, which strengthens family bonds and reflects core cultural values such as filial piety, support for economic realities, and casual family gatherings.

The design focuses on enhancing holistic well-being by balancing privacy and openness, fostering physical, emotional, and social health for families, and promoting unity and mutual support.
