🪱 Vermicomposting — Overview

What It Is

Vermicomposting uses specific earthworm species to digest organic waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer called vermicast / worm castings. It is a low-temperature, biological decomposition process — no high heat phase — ideal for the Philippine climate.



🪱 Common Worm Species Used in PH

- African Nightcrawler (Eudrilus eugeniae) — most widely used in PH; fast-growing, large, tolerates tropical heat up to ~30°C
- Indian Blue Worm (Perionyx excavatus) — also popular; thrives in warm conditions
- Red Wiggler (Eisenia fetida) — common worldwide; also works well



⚙️ How It Works

1. Prepare bedding: shredded cardboard, rice straw, coconut husk, or dried leaves; keep moist like a damp sponge
2. Add worms: 1 kg worms can eat ~1 kg organic waste per day
3. Feed: kitchen scraps, fruit/vegetable peels, animal manure (chicken, cow, horse), crop residues — avoid citrus, salt, meat/oil, dairy
4. Maintain: keep temp 20–30°C, moisture 60–70%, pH near neutral; cover to keep dark & moist
5. Harvest: in 30–60 days — worms convert waste into dark, granular vermicast; separate worms & reuse


⚠️ Limitations

- ❌ Temperature-sensitive: above 32°C or below 18°C → worms slow down/die; needs shade/cooling in summer
- ❌ Cannot process: large woody material, bones, fats, dairy, citrus, salty waste
- ❌ Requires moisture & protection: needs cover from heavy rain & direct sun
- ❌ Slower for very large volumes: better suited for household → community → farm scale; less for municipal tons/day

🪧 Rotary Drum Composting — Overview

What It Is

Rotary drum composting is an in-vessel aerobic composting method using a tilted, rotating cylindrical drum. Organic waste is continuously tumbled, mixed, and aerated inside, speeding up decomposition vs. open windrow or static pile methods.



⚙️ How It Works

1. Feed biodegradable waste (food scraps, manure, crop residues, market waste) into the drum.
2. Rotate the drum regularly — internal fins lift & drop material, mixing it evenly and releasing trapped heat/gases.
3. Aerate & heat up — aerobic microbes thrive at 55–70°C, killing pathogens and w**d seeds.
4. Discharge partially stabilized compost after a short cycle → move to curing area for ~3–4 weeks to mature fully.

- Fast cycle: Active fermentation in 5–10 days (vs. weeks/months for traditional methods)
- Odor & pest control: Fully enclosed → minimal smell, less vermin, less leachate
- Space-saving: ~70% smaller footprint than windrow systems

🪵 Windrow Composting — Overview

What It Is?

Windrow composting is the simplest, most widely used open-air aerobic composting method. Organic waste is stacked into long, narrow, raised piles called windrows, which are turned periodically to aerate and speed decomposition.


📐 Standard Dimensions

- Height: 1–2 m
- Width: 2–5 m at base
- Length: as space allows
- Shape: tall, narrow, rounded or triangular profile


⚙️ How It Works

1. Mix materials: Combine greens (moist/nitrogen-rich: manure, food scraps) & browns (dry/carbon-rich: straw, leaves, rice hulls) at ~C:N ratio 25–30:1
2. Form windrows: Stack into long piles on well-drained, level ground
3. Maintain: Keep moisture ~50–60% (damp sponge). Turn every 7–10 days (mechanized) or every 2–4 weeks (manual)
4. Heat & kill: Reaches 55–70°C → kills pathogens & w**d seeds
5. Cure: After active phase (~3–4 weeks), let mature
