HELPING FARMERS THROUGH THIS PORTABLE GRAIN DRYER 🚜

A young Filipino inventor is tackling one of agriculture’s biggest challenges—drying rice during rainy seasons and power outages.

John Dence Flores, an Industrial Design graduate from De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde, developed Anihon, a compact and portable grain dryer that helps farmers dry palay all year round.

Designed for small farms and cooperatives, Anihon uses a hybrid system powered by electricity and used cooking oil—cutting carbon emissions while ensuring continuous operation even during blackouts.

Flores was inspired by his hometown in Albay, where unpredictable weather causes huge postharvest losses.

“Around 408,764 metric tons of palay—or 4.5% of the country’s harvest—go to waste yearly,” he shared.

Traditional sun drying often fails during long rainy spells, leading to mold and spoilage.

Built with help from Benilde mentors and engineers, Anihon features four drying trays, intuitive controls, and an eight-hour drying cycle.

Flores has since donated a unit to farmers in Aklan and hopes to expand the design for other crops using solar and wind energy.
