A Grandfather’s Legacy
Guillermo’s Garden was named after Tatay Guiling who looked after the place on his retirement. He planted mangoes, sineguelas or Spanish Plums, cacao, coconuts, avocadoes, jackfruit, guyabano or soursop, santol or cotton fruit and other fruit trees for us, his grandchildren, to climb on and enjoy whenever they visit. Moreover, he planted flowers around the place so that he can see them wherever direction he looked.
Hardwoods also abound. Tatay Guiling planted acacia or rain tree, narra, mahogany, gmelina and white molave to shade the area and give shelter to the birds that chirp from dawn to dusk. Bamboos also grow in the place, providing local source for building material.
The garden has a small tilapia pond where water lilies grow and where many of my cousins fell and splashed into it. What was once a small watering hole has now been deepened and banked with rocks to prevent soil erosion. Tatay Guiling once dredged the pond himself deep enough that we used to have a bamboo raft in it.
Years after he passed, we’re still continuing one of his legacies of taking care of this place. Mowing the lawn, watering the plants, cutting the undergrowth, trimming the shrubs, and planting fruits and vegetables are just a few of the things to keep the place in a better condition for family, friends and everyone to enjoy.
