Helminthostachys zeylanica – The Ancient Fern
This rare and remarkable fern, locally known as tungkod-langit, belongs to one of the most primitive fern families, Ophioglossaceae. Native to Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands, it’s a living relic of plant evolution that has remained almost unchanged for millions of years.
What makes it special?
Its distinctive fertile stalk rises dramatically from the base of the plant, resembling a spear or staff—hence its name “tungkod-langit” (heaven’s staff).
Unlike most ferns, it produces just a single frond with leaflets and a central spore stalk, making it instantly recognizable.
Considered a rare find in the wild due to habitat loss and overharvesting.
Cultural & Medicinal Significance
For centuries, H. zeylanica has been valued in traditional medicine. Different cultures use its rhizomes and fronds as remedies for fever, inflammation, and digestive issues. It’s also featured in folklore as a “plant of strength” due to its striking form.
Growing Tips
