The two main types of current characterization: Direct (direction unchanging, could be pulsating or changing in amplitude or just constant) and Alternating (AC).
The changes in current, even in DC will cause an AC component to be superimposed on the DC. Pure sinusoidal AC do not have harmonics, otherwise, these harmonics create issues.
A case in point is a MODIFIED SINE WAVE Inverter which is a common, inexpensive DC to AC converter. Using this Inverter on motor or inductive loads will cause ringing or the generation of the 2nd (60hz x2) or 3rd (60hz x3) harmonics and cause some components to fail.
