Integrated Farming with African Night Crawler

Integrated farming is a neverending cycle that provides us with opportunities to lower costs, increase profits out of our own resourcefulness. What would otherwise be thought of as waste can be used to improve the next stage of your operation.

In this system, we plant rice and corn. Instead of leaving the rice straws or corn stovers on the field, we feed it to our cattle. The manure that comes from our cattle gives us two options: 1) spread it over our pastures to increase its yields and in effect, be able to feed more cattle; 2) feed it to our African Nightcrawlers to produce a more superior product: vermicast. The system goes full circle when vermicast is applied to our rice and corn fields, helping us improve our soil while increasing production at a lower cost.

Vermicast, also known as worm castings, is a nutrient-rich natural fertilizer produced by worms. The frequency of applying vermicast to your garden bed depends on several factors, such as:

1. Soil type and condition
2. Plant type and growth stage
3. Climate and weather
4. Desired nutrient levels

Here are some general guidelines:

1. For established plants: Apply vermicast at a rate of 1-2 cups per plant, mixed into the soil around the base, every 2-3 months.
2. For seedlings: Mix 1/4 to 1/2 cup of vermicast into the soil at planting time, and repeat every 1-2 months.
3. For soil conditioning: Apply 2-4 inches of vermicast to the soil surface, and mix it in thoroughly, every 6-12 months.

Remember to start with small amounts and gradually increase as needed. Vermicast is a potent fertilizer, and excessive application can lead to nutrient imbalances.

Also, consider the following tips:

- Mix vermicast with other compost or soil amendments for a balanced nutrient profile.
- Apply vermicast during the growing season for optimal plant uptake.
- Avoid over-applying, as this can lead to nutrient buildup and potential environmental issues.

Monitor your plants' response and adjust the application frequency accordingly.

Happy gardening!
