Getz Pharma has set a monumental benchmark with "Astola," a state-of-the-art facility in Karachi that proudly stands as the first pharmaceutical plant in South Asia to earn the prestigious LEED Platinum Certification.

Developed over nearly a decade by Lead Civil Consultants Gul & Thariani alongside façade architect Saifullah Sami, the campus masterfully balances GMP-compliant functionality with architectural dignity across its massive production and high-capacity warehousing blocks.

Featuring an elegant, sustainable design, optimized logistics, and an inviting open piazza, this visionary project not only accommodates extraordinary production demands but acts as a dynamic catalyst for Pakistan’s urban and industrial growth.

This isn’t just a garden.
It’s 40 years of architectural serenity—sketched and planted.

In 1985, Gul & Thariani Architects envisioned a tranquil oasis for Glaxo Laboratories (now GSK) in Karachi.

Inspired by Japanese philosophy.
Designed on Pakistani soil.
Sketched. Built. Preserved.

Swipe through to see:
→ The original hand-drawn architectural studies
→ The design decisions behind every curve and corner
→ The garden today—still calm, still complete

This is what happens when landscape becomes legacy.
Architecture becomes experience.
And sketches become space.

To every architect, designer, and creator—
Your pencil can outlast decades.
Design for now, sketch for history.

Project: Pharmnova.
Clients: Gatron Group of companies.
Status: Complete.
Year: 2022-2024.

Introducing the Pharmnova Pharmaceutical Industry, designed to integrate seamlessly with its surrounding context while symbolizing a forward-thinking renewal at the core of the complex.

The building’s elevation aligns with the existing volumes, with only subtle adjustments made to complement the surrounding structures. The design focuses on simplicity and efficiency, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation.

Eastern facade: Double-glazed modules strategically placed to protect production spaces from excessive sun heat and light.

Southern facade: Opaque plaster with staggered vertical apertures, designed to enhance horizontal proportions and introduce subtle dynamism to an otherwise static elevation.

Edge detailing: Horizontal planes extend at the edges to break the box-like form, adding visual interest and balance.

An approach driven by functionality, simplicity, and a deep understanding of the site’s context.

We were engaged by a Renowned Client who intended to develop a Pharma Company in there multi acre empire in Landhi Industrial area, Karachi. The site already consisted of a No. of buildings with patterned language of Brutalist industrial masses with elevation finishes in natural combed cement plaster which best expresses the industrial function and is maintenance free.

According to the Clients typology and perception, the new edifice had to come to terms with its proximity to pre-existing volumes built over the years as the empire had evolved. It therefore had to integrate into a sedimented context, albeit, had to symbolize renewal, a trait made even important by the building’s location at the core front, representing the face of the vast complex.

Thus, the Elevation has generally been adopted to match with that of the existing, with the exception of few minor changes which we feel are sympathetic to the earlier treatment.

The development of the elevation in this option is on extremely simple and clear lines, avoiding all sorts of frills and superfluous ornamentations, which reflects both the integral planning and also aid in functional efficacy.

The Eastern front façade presents a regularly spaced array of double-glazed modules in the protruded masses, naturally punching the production spaces which are prone to sun heat and direct lighting.

The south, being the heat gaining side, is prevalently an opaque plaster frontage pierced only by a few vertical linear apertures in staggered manner which both complements the length and horizontality and brings some dynamism in otherwise a static planer elevation. The horizontal rectilinear planes have been extended at edges to break the box type feeling.
