"Spatial interventions" are intentional changes made to a physical space in order to influence how people use it, experience it, or perceive it. The goal can be to improve functionality, aesthetics, accessibility, or social interaction.
In simple words:
A spatial intervention is when architects, designers, or planners “step in” to reshape a space for better use, experience, or meaning.
Urban context:
Turning an unused parking lot into a public plaza.
Adding bike lanes or pedestrian pathways to improve mobility.
Installing temporary pavilions, art installations, or pop-ups in empty spaces.
Architectural context:
Rearranging the layout of a building to create better circulation.
Introducing skylights, partitions, or mezzanines to change how a space is experienced.
Interior design context:
Using furniture, color, or lighting to redefine zones within a room.
Transforming a rigid office layout into flexible, collaborative workspaces.
Social/cultural interventions:
Designing inclusive playgrounds that accommodate all abilities.
Temporary shelters or community kitchens in underused areas.
