Lets talk Pine Bark Mulch...

Properly placed organic mulch can benefit soil and plants in many ways. Mulch insulates the soil and plants in winter, but also keeps soil cool and moist in summer. Mulch can control w**ds and erosion. It also helps to retain soil moisture and prevent splash back of soil that can contain soil-borne fungi and diseases. With so many choices of organic mulches on the market, it can be confusing..

What is Pine Bark?
Pine bark mulch, as the name suggests, is made from the shredded bark of pine trees. Like other wood mulches, pine bark mulch is available for purchase in different forms and texture. Most commonly in sizes 15mm/25mm (small to medium nuggets) 25mm/40mm (medium to large nuggets). Which consistency or texture you choose depends on your own preference and the garden's needs. Pine nuggets take longer to break down; therefore, last longer in the garden than finely shredded mulches.

Benefits of Pine Bark Mulch
Pine bark mulch in gardens tends to last longer than most organic mulches, whether finely shredded or in nugget form. The natural red-dark brown color of pine bark mulch also lasts longer than other wood mulches, which tend to fade to gray after a year. However, pine bark mulch is very lightweight. While this can make it easy to spread, it makes it inappropriate for slopes, as the bark can be easily moved by wind and rain. Pine bark nuggets are naturally buoyant and will float in circumstances with too much water. Any organic mulch benefits soil and plants by retaining moisture, protecting plants from extreme cold or heat, and preventing the spread of soil-borne diseases. This is true of pine bark mulch as well. Pine bark mulch is especially beneficial to acid-loving garden plants. It also adds aluminum to the soil, promoting green, leafy growth.

Perfect for hedgelines and borders.

Fast-growing and drought tolerant, frost tolerant, Cupressus lusitanica has been introduced from Mexico's provenances to different parts of the world. It is widely cultivated, both as an ornamental tree and for timber production, in warm, temperate and subtropical regions around the world. Trees have not been selected for cultivation from northern Mexico populations, which have a heavy drought endurance.

Cupressuss lusitanica is an evergreen conifer tree with a conic to ovoid-conic crown, growing to 40 m tall. The foliage grows in dense sprays, dark green to somewhat yellow-green in colour. The leaves are scale-like, 2–5 mm long, and produced on rounded (not flattened) shoots. The seed cones are globose to oblong, 10–20 mm long, with four to 10 scales, green at first, maturing brown or grey-brown about 25 months after pollination.

The scientific name lusitanica (of Portugal) refers to its very early cultivation there, with plants imported from Mexico to the monastery at Buçaco, near Coimbra in Portugal in about 1634; these trees were already over 130 years old when the species was botanically described by Miller in 1768.

In Mexico, the tree is also known as cedro blanco (white cedar) or teotlate.

Arbutus unedo is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the family Ericaceae, native to the Mediterranean Basin and Western Europe. The tree is well known for its fruits, the arbutus berry, which bear some resemblance to the strawberry, hence the common name strawberry tree. However, it is not closely related to true strawberries of the genus Fragaria.

100% natural pine bark made in Portugal.

Our pine bark retains soil moisture, reducing the frequency of watering and reducing water consumption. Can keep a bit of water but not too much. Fractioned bark holds less or more water depending on the fraction. The coarse fractions are used in professional orchid growers and are very “airy”. The air content increase strongly depends on the fraction distribution of the bark. The bark is a hard and phisicaly stable material so it brings stability to structures of mixtures. The best mixture is air content 40% to 45% and GBW (water in substrate) similar with 10% to 13%. The balance between these to factors results in an excelent orchid substrate.

Free from pathogenic microorganisms, fungi and w**d seeds. Its steam sterilized so free of pathogens. Composting to make it phytosanitairy clean is not necessary as it is steamed (from origin the bark of the Pinus pinaster hardly carries illnesses).

Protects roots from frost and excessive heat while improving the structure of your soil. Regulates the PH of the soil and improves the quality of plants.

Its decorative element highlights the green grass and colours in the flowers.

The global concern at the environmental level is based on water savings.
In this sense, the use of pine bark in outdoor spaces can contribute substantially to reduce the current level of irrigation.

The main advantage in its use is to hinder the growth of w**ds and contribute to the maintenance of soil moisture, reducing the frequency of irrigation. In addition to these technical reasons, we would like to highlight its beauty.

Pine Bark Mulch – This is one of the most popular mulches available in the market today. It's great as a base for potted plants and for small trees and shrubs. Pine bark mulches don't matt down as easily as cedar so you won't have to rake them as often.

Mulch can mitigate soil compaction, and it is better than bare soil at capturing water and fostering water pe*******on, so it reduces runoff. It also slows water evaporation from the underlying soil by up to 35 percent and it moderates soil temperatures in the summer and winter.
