The Winter Home Battle: Mold and Humidity

Living in the Algarve is amazing, but it can have its challenges.

One being mold and humidity in homes. Mold growth is a common issue, especially during the winter when properties can become cold and damp.

Prevention

Controlling humidity levels and preventing mold are key to maintaining a healthy home.

Here are some tips to reduce moisture and mold:

1. Use a Dehumidifier (electric, non-electric, or both!)
Investing in a dehumidifier is a great way to reduce humidity in your home by extracting the moisture from the air. Put them in areas that are prone to mold growth such as bathrooms.

2. DO NOT Use Portable Gas Heaters in Your Home
Gas heaters release moisture into the air as they burn, not to mention toxic fumes. Look into options like electric heaters, combination air conditioning & heating system (many have a dehumidification option!), or pellet stoves.

3. Air, Air, and more Air!!!
Increasing ventilation and airflow into your home is crucial for reducing moisture and preventing mold growth. Open windows and doors during the day to improve air circulation. If possible, install exhaust fans in areas prone to high humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

4. Apply Fungicide Paint on Walls
Use anti mold paint on walls, especially in moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms, to help inhibit mold growth. These paints are specially formulated to contain anti-fungal properties that deter mold colonization.

5. Clean Walls and Floors Regularly
Regular cleaning is essential for preventing mold growth. Clean walls and floors with soapy water, bleach, or a fungicide solution to eliminate any existing mold spores or potential growth sites. Pay special attention to bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas where moisture is present.

How to Clean and Remove Mold

Despite our best efforts, mold can sometimes still appear in homes. When facing a mold problem, it is important to address it promptly and thoroughly. Follow these steps for effective cleaning and remediation:

1. Wear Protective Gear
Before starting and to ensure your safety: wear gloves, goggles, and a mask. Mold spores and cleaning chemicals can cause respiratory issues.

2. Scrub Vigorously
Use a stiff brush to scrub the affected area, removing visible mold growth. Apply a mixture of water and detergent, or a mold-specific cleaner. Thoroughly clean and scrub the surface to eliminate all traces of mold.

3. Apply Mold-Killing Products
After scrubbing, apply mold-killing products such as bleach, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or commercially available mold cleaners. These substances help to disinfect the area and prevent mold spores from regrowing. Follow the instructions on the product packaging and take appropriate precautions when using chemical-based cleaners.

4. Address the Source of Moisture
To prevent mold from returning, it is crucial to identify and address the source of moisture. Inspect your home for any water leaks or excess moisture, and promptly repair them. Ensure bathrooms are properly ventilated and consider installing exhaust fans to reduce humidity levels.

5. Seek Professional Remediation Services (if necessary)
For extensive mold problems or large infestations, it may be necessary to seek professional remediation services. Mold remediation experts have the knowledge, expertise, and equipment to handle severe mold situations safely and effectively. They can not only eliminate existing mold but also offer guidance on how to prevent future mold growth.

Winter is almost here in Portugal.
Here are some simple DIY tips to help keep your home warm and cozy this winter:

Tip #1: Seal Your Window Frames
The way to do this is by first identifying where the windows are leaking the most. To find out, go to your windows on a windy day and see if you can feel the air. Next, seal them with the help of a caulking gun.

Tip #2: Weather-Strip Your Doors
When it's nighttime, take a flashlight and go to the other side of the door and shine it through. If you can see the light pass, air will also accompany it. To seal it, you can use foam weather-stripping.

Tip #3: Use Winter
Curtains
If sealing the windows is just too big of a process, or you would like to add another layer of protection, you can turn to these heavy curtains. These will stop any kind of air from passing in between them, also keeping your warm air in.

Tip #4: Filling the Gaps
Gaps and holes are a big reason for the loss of heated air, it hampers the efficiency of the heating system. Gaps are usually found in the plumbing or the holes in which pipes pass through. To seal them, you can spray expanding foam, which will take the shape of the gap.

And last but not least…

Tip #5: Let the Sun Come in
The Algarve has over 300 days of sunshine. It's not always necessary to fire up the heaters for warm air. There are many days when the sun rays shine
bright in the winter, and you can use that to your
advantage. During the peak of the day, open the curtains and let the Sun shine in!

Stay warm my friends!
