Did you know that sometimes trees and plants show nutrient deficiencies because the soil is too alkaline or acidic for their absorbsion of the Micronutrients required?

An easy method for testing soil alkalinity is the vinegar and baking soda test. This method uses common household kitchen items to determine if your soil is alkaline, acidic, or neutral.

Method:

1. Gather Your Samples
In a clean bucket gather from several areas of your garden a mixture of superficial soil to about 20cm deep and mix the samples together removing roots, rocks, and debris.

2. Select 2 tablespoons of soil from the bucket.
Divide the soil into two clean jars or bowls (1 tablespoon each).

3. Test for Alkalinity (Vinegar Test)
Pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar into one container of soil.
Result: If the mixture fizzes, bubbles, or fizzes, your soil is alkaline (pH above 7.0).

4. Test for Acidity (Baking Soda Test)
If the first test did not bubble, take the second container.
Add 1/2 cup of distilled water and mix it to create a muddy, "milkshake" consistency.
Then add 1/2 cup of baking soda and mix.
Result: If it fizzes, your soil is acidic (pH below 7.0).

5. Neutral Soil
If neither test produces a reaction, your soil is likely neutral (pH 7).
