COLARES.
A fantasy of sorts (more Raul Lino than Walt Disney). Our new residential project takes shape at a fast pace.

Architecture in Portugal, and in Europe (and even across the Atlantic in Brazil) owes a lot to Raul Lino.
The fact that this fact still irritates (and irates) a lot of Architects from the 50s onwards, is proof of two things: that they studied very little of his work or writings, and that they misread the man himself as a transformative character.
What many see as vernacular today was created by Lino, by proving that tradition was actually revolutionary, and the other way around.
Our new residential project in Colares plays with many of the codes which Lino created as a working base, and by doing so is not just a pretty postcard of the region’s whimsical “pastiches”, but a re-work of a land which is rough and raw, and sandwiched between the mountains and the sea.
By revisiting what a “Chalet” or Holiday home means in this area, and its traditional “dressings”, our project manages to develop a particular and singular contemporary language for a family deeply in the now.
Functional, full of open-plans and beautiful details as they play with inside and outside features (with a very special swimming pool), the house and garden are embedded with pure lines and geometrical forms which hide a rather complex structure.
Fantasy is made of make-belief. If it’s structured, it provides you with a hindsight of what reality could be like, and look like. This is it.

SCUSATE.
Why the allure of SCUSA is always plural.

As Restaurants go, everyone seems to be stepping up the idea that one should design a place which feels like an “experience”.
In a way, as Retail lost most of its appeal as everything looked like everything else (and when experiments like Colette failed as concept stores), Restaurants turned into an open field to let your design dreams lose, and became almost like a fairground (or failed fairytale).
The problem with this is that most forgot one little basic fact: the food.
A great Restaurant must provide an experience in taste, certainly accompanied by a positive and exciting visual and spatial memory, but the food is always the ping-pong ball.
As Designers, SCUSA proves that we can put the food at centre-stage (the ping-pong ball is now a pizza-dough folding table), and provide a beautiful, singular and cinematic setting to enjoy every bite.
In a way, in Italy you can breakfast like a Borromeo, lunch like an Agnelli, and dine like a Torlonia.
That’s not too much to ask in Lisbon, right?
PS-Pedro Pascal might be holidaying in Portugal but he seems to always find the perfect SCUSA to avoid the Paparazzi outside our door.

TECHNICOLOUR.
A singular Restaurant blooms (and blows expectations).
How our Studio understands that a splash of bright textures and hues makes a difference.
Our Santarém Hotel Project seen and revisited through our latest Restaurant makeover.

As some Designers followed the trend of minimal and subdued with everything related to Residential and Hospitality, our Studio carefully studied how each project should reflect its time, place, and people (not Magazine Editors who scream when they see anything besides beige).
Our new Restaurant makeover in Santarém reflects the enduring and long lasting effect this place holds in our hearts, and the way we completely overhauled a Hotel which now feels warm, embracing, and exciting.
Restaurants in Hotels tend to look dull, boring and exactly the same. They serve a purpose, and are supposed to be functional.
As we see it, they should always be playful and joyful (and with that extra shot of pizzazz).
Alan Faena built a star reputation by planning Restaurants which invite you in, almost like a visual rollercoaster.
If it worked for Alan, it works for us.

PLACER.
An Office in Lisbon, and the (place) to be.
Also “un placer” in Spanish.

Our Studio has a particular and singular ability, and extensive experience, in understanding and configuring space.
From Restaurants to Hotels, from Corporate Offices to Student Residencies, we understand how something needs to fit for someone, and mainly how those elements are defined and determined by the notion of somewhere.
In a way, we fit the bill by understanding how any briefing fits a particular purpose, as well as its time and place.
For PLACER, a new singular Office project in Lisbon’s Docklands, we are developing something quite unique: a place to work which does not run away from colour and texture, and which embraces a multidisciplinary approach to productivity.
Space is “divided” into a flowing web of rooms which communicate freely, and areas are multipurpose and multifunctional.
Office space nowadays has to deal with complex notions of privacy and group interaction, and as Designers we made sure we understood that.
PLACER is growing into something special, as we build it step by step and make sure it is not rooted too much in its time.
It needs to feel timeless, and work for the long run.
In a way, we love to build things that last, and you can see here how our first sketches and drawings will turn out, as heavy machinery moves in.
