Preview. What some call a Première.
Lisbon Design Week 2026.

As the clock ticks, and as deadlines loom, any project reaching its final stage takes us to a place where cold sweat and anxiety rule.
Everything which we thought to build is now a fact, and everything we thought to achieve is now subject to evaluation.
Not ours, those who thought about it for years, and made it happen, but of the “public”.
As we preview the new Faculdade de Letras building during the kick-off of Lisbon Design Week, it’s important to look back, thanking a huge team who made it happen, and to look forward, taking the building into new territory, literally.
In a few months, hundreds of students and teachers will occupy, daily, chairs and tables, rooms and corridors, and will go up and down the stairs which for many months led nowhere.
Now they lead somewhere.
Thank you to an extraordinary Team who made this possible, and a special thank you to Architect Manuela Oliveira who saw something where there was nothing.
Architecture and Design somehow walk side by side, but rarely hold hands.
Maybe it’s time we shake them.

REFLECTIONS.
We do it with mirrors (and so did Agatha Christie, so we’re in great company).

As Designers we have had the pleasure of working with multiple briefings which required clever technical solutions.
Our clients and partners asked for a little bit of magic, and we delivered (and no bunny came out of a hat).
Our Studio has an extraordinary experience within the F&B and Hospitality markets, but somehow we always wanted to do more within Retail.
Shops, which strive to grab a client’s attention, and which play to a specific tune to perceive spending patterns, are now the true lifestyle destinations to understand what works, and what doesn’t.
Space, textures, lighting, so much is needed to make sure someone walks in and says hi.
For last year’s Lisbon Design Week we created something special, and shiny, for one of Europe’s oldest cosmetics brands, which required a little bit more than magic.
It required something playful, mirroring the idea that everyone is a reflection of someone and something else.
We all work with mirrors as image-shapers.
They reflect certain angles, perspectives and plans. They also reflect certain positions and possibilities.
As Agatha Christie would say “They do it with mirrors”.
As a Studio, who wouldn’t want to do a Poirot or Miss Marple number?

COLARES.
How it will look like.
Tradition versus Transition.
Not an easy balance.

As villages with a singular magic, and reputation, go, Colares beats most contestants at the pole.
Small (actually tiny), between the mountains (well, hills) of Sintra and the sea, it has a quiet, paired down mystical atmosphere which is hard to describe and define.
The land of the famous wine, the land of the famous but hidden houses (the Schlumbergers, to name just one), the land of tiny restaurants and gem-like shops for those in the know.
Our new project in Colares tries to match this sense of old-class tradition (because it has glamour and because it is not obvious), with the contemporary needs of a family.
It’s a big house where space actually breathes throughout, almost borderless, and where everything (including bespoke furniture) seems to float.
The main balance we needed to find was that it did not have that kind of “cool but cold” aesthetic which is more straightforward Scandinavia than playful Portugal, and that it did not lack comfort.
Warm and earthy tones, hidden details which cover and uncover surfaces, and clever (functional) ways to understand space as something which flows.
As our dear friends Carla and Bruno from HUM Gallery know (their house is a personal favourite), Colares is not for everyone.
It is raw, rough on the edges and it has a particular, unruly character.
Not everything needs to be picture-perfect.
It just needs to make sense.

Centre Stage (and sideways).
Everything we do has a heart from which everything else radiates.
Architecture and Design as a love of extras.

The word extraordinary starts with an extra.
Everything which is outside of what we call standard (and ordinary), should therefore stand out.
As it happens, the word extraordinary also has another meaning.
For Architects and Designers it means that it is a specific, sometimes contradictory, feeling of adding a little spark that makes a big difference.
At SPACEGRAM we work with various notions of space, and we have to understand how we can transform that same space without it looking that a hurricane went through it.
A common mistake, also done at installations and collaborations, is to presume that we will impress a crowd by showcasing objects (and the way they react in specific circumstances) in a grand theatrical way without any relatable context.
That approach may leave one impressed, but not touched.
What we did together with Oficina Marques and Viúva Lamego for ARCÁDIA last year was therefore an exercise of putting objects centre stage, showcasing the extras as significant parts of a whole.
We are also extras, as we work in the background.
But sometimes the sideways turn into sidekicks, and we turn our gaze to the camera just to check the centre is exactly where it should be.
