WHEN A BUILDING BECOMES A STAIRCASE.

Termeh Office Commercial Building in Hamedan, Iran.

Designed by Farshad Mehdizadeh Architects + Ahmad Bathaei, the building turns a simple office-commercial program into a sculptural public gesture.

The ground floor is used for retail, while the upper floor contains a private office. Instead of treating the two levels as separate boxes, the architects bent the dividing slab into a habitable staircase, connecting the office directly to the street.

Its brick surface continues across the facade and stair, using local brick and traditional bricklaying patterns to connect the contemporary form with its historic urban context.

Architecture here is not just a facade — it becomes a path.

We are celebrating the birthday of the great Frei Otto today. He revolutionized the world of architecture by proving that strength can come from tension and flexibility rather than just weight. This spectacular interior shows the power of his wooden grid shell technology. The structure is composed of a complex lattice that was literally pushed up into these beautiful organic curves. It feels more like a living forest canopy than a traditional building. The reflection on the wet ground captures the intricate repetition of the wooden members that hold up the vast volume above. What is the most impressive lightweight structure you have ever seen in person?

Confluence Park in San Antonio, Texas, designed by Lake Flato Architects and Matsys Design, is a 2018 public space focused on environmental education. Spanning 900 ft², the park’s pavilion, designed by Matsys, is a remarkable structure that collects rainwater into an integrated catchment system, reflecting sustainability at its core. Alongside the pavilion, an education center with a green roof and solar panels generates renewable energy for the site. Confluence Park offers a hands-on learning experience about the San Antonio River watershed and South Texas ecotypes, encouraging visitors to engage with nature while exploring water conservation.
