🌾 COSTRUIRE INSIEME: PIANTE INFESTANTI E SOSTENIBILITA'

Building skills for regenerative futures. 🌾✨

Next month, CanyaViva will be bringing natural building, sustainable architecture, and hands-on ecological design to in Montargil, Portugal.

We’re excited to invite the final participants to join this unique workshop experience, where natural building knowledge meets contemporary regenerative practices in one of Europe’s most inspiring conscious festival environments.

Together, we will explore:

🌱 Cane architecture and natural building techniques
🌱 Sustainable design principles
🌱 Practical hands-on construction experience
🌱 Community collaboration
🌱 Regenerative approaches to land-based creativity

This is more than a workshop - it’s an opportunity to learn practical ecological construction methods, connect with like-minded people, and actively participate in building resilient, sustainable futures.

Whether you are a designer, builder, student, land steward, or simply passionate about natural construction, this experience offers valuable tools for real-world regenerative action.

Only a few places remain.

Building regenerative futures. 🌾✨

Over the last weeks in Casa Branca, we have been collaborating with and in this natural building workshop as part of the wider transformative vision connected to Évora_27’s Travão de Emergência / Emergency Cord project.

Together with an incredible group of 15 dedicated students from Universität Linz, we are now entering the final phase — a living example of how sustainable architecture, ecological design, and community collaboration can actively contribute to the regeneration of rural territories.

A huge thank you to for their essential role in local coordination, territorial stewardship, and their ongoing commitment to rural regeneration through culture, ecology, and community-led transformation.

Special thanks as well to / Universität Linz for their fundamental contribution in bringing and hosting the students, while coordinating this valuable educational exchange. Through their work in sustainable architecture, social design, and participatory rural development, BASEhabitat bridges academic research with practical regenerative action on the ground.

This collaboration represents exactly the kind of partnerships needed for the future of rural development:

🌱 Local communities
🌱 Universities and research institutions
🌱 Traditional building knowledge
🌱 Sustainable innovation

As we approach the final week, we’re proud to see this project taking physical form — rooted in the land, built by many hands, and contributing to a broader movement for ecological resilience, cultural renewal, and sustainable futures.

🌿 CanyaViva @ ZNA Gathering 2026 🌿

We’re happy to announce our next 6-week cane construction program in Alentejo, Portugal — from June 1st til the end of July.

Join us to build large-scale festival structures using Mediterranean cane!

Together we’ll create organic shade and social spaces for one of Europe’s most unique festivals .

You’ll gain experience in:
• natural building & sustainable design
• structural systems with cane
• collaborative, large-scale construction

At the end, you’ll have the chance to experience ZNA Gathering Festival and enjoy the spaces you helped create ✨

💛 Former students are welcome to join free of charge

It took two months of repair, living and working beside the Albufera, to bring this structure back into shape.

The process began by carefully removing the outer cover, untying all knots and carefully pushing the cane framework back into its original form, and then sewing cane by cane the cover back down to the newly shaped structure.

Cane structures are surprisingly resilient, but they need patience and the right techniques to recover their strength without causing more harm than repair.

Once the structure was realigned, we rebuilt the protective layers step by step: earth, lime, ceramic adhesive, and finally a siloxane finish. Each layer has a role — helping with adhesion, flexibility, waterproofing, and breathability — so the structure can continue to perform well in this humid coastal environment.

To finish, we renewed the colour across the entire surface, giving the structure a fresh coat of siloxane paint that protects it and brings the whole form back to life.

From the outside, it now looks almost as if nothing ever happened. Only one detail tells the story: a metal arch added for reinforcement, and wrapped in cane to blend naturally with the rest of the structure.

Repairs like this are always a reminder that natural materials can last a long time when they’re understood, maintained, and treated with care.

Thanks to Inés at for her neverending support throughout the entire process.

There are projects that take years… and there are dreams that quietly grow roots, almost whilst going unnoticed 🌿
In May 2023, we began building this hobbit house on Silvia’s land in Castro Marim, with a group of 12 brave and curious students, shaping the first structure with our hands and a lot of shared enthusiasm.
Shortly after, 6 more students joined us for six immersive weeks, breathing life into the first interior spaces, including benches, bathroom, kitchen and chimney.
We continued step by step, season by season…
In the autumn of 2024, we finally finished the roof and blanketed it with earth. Today it’s green, alive, and merging seamlessly with the rolling hills of Castro Marim — as if it had always belonged there.
Inside, the surfaces are still unfinished, the textures still raw… yet the space already feels deeply organic. Warm. Nurturing. Like a quiet embrace from the earth itself.
This project would not exist without Silvia, her vision, her persistence, her bravery. She has been the fuel, the courage, and the inspiration behind every phase of this long journey.
Thank you, Silvia  💚
May the path ahead be filled with strength, clarity and positivity.
And who knows… perhaps soon these hills will be dotted with hobbit houses, gently but boldly rising from the earth, one by one.

Sunsets over the rolling hills of Castro Marim bring a kind of peace I never knew til recently.

I realise now that it isn't a peace drawn from ownership or belonging, but from knowing that the land is our future, untangled from systems still desperately trying to deny us our sovereignty.

In this untangling comes an awakening, a remembering of our responsibility both as a species and as individuals.

Our power was never lost. It moves through us in every choice we make, regardless of who attempts to govern us from behind the veil.

As the light falls, one thing remains as clear as day:

We were always sovereign,
and we are here to stay.

A new coat was given to the nest last summer, taking care of what time had gently worn.
Originally built in Tavira in 2020, still standing strong and full of stories.

New year.
Same projects.
We haven’t started many new projects for a while, and we won’t be for some time to come. What we are doing is repairing old structures, rebuilding existing ones - restoring, renewing, recycling, replanting, and eventually sowing seeds for the future.
We are also, finally, growing some roots - something much needed by a project that has been mostly nomadic for over two decades.

A lot of what we do isn’t about starting new things, but about continuing: returning to structures, land, ideas, and communities, and deciding again to care for them.
2026 won’t be about more projects.
It will be about deeper attention to the ones already alive.
Wishing you a year of continuity, not noise.

Some captured moments from the rebuilding process in Valencia, where the environment brought new layers to both the process and materials, blending old and new.

At times, light and dark, textures and shadows all come out to play, revealing something different at every step.

The changing light brings new life to each curve, showing how every stage of the process is as beautiful as the final result.
