DAF cordially invites you to a talk titled “Archipreneurship – Taking the leap in the business of architecture” by guest speakers Ibrahim Jaidah, Group CEO and Chief Architect of Arab Engineering Bureau and Nadia Maqbool, Founding Partner of 23 Degrees North. The DAF talk will be held on Wednesday 16th January 2019 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at the Cultural Forum’s Outdoor Terrace, Msheireb Downtown Doha.
About the speakers:
Ibrahim M. Jaidah is an award-winning architect who is known for delivering world-class projects to the Qatari architectural scene. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma (USA) in 1988 and has acquired AEB in 1991. Under his leadership, the firm grew from 6 to over 600 highly qualified employees and expanded its presence with branch offices across Middle East and Southeast Asia. In his professional career, Ibrahim has overseen completion of over 1500 projects, making AEB one of the influential firms in the region.
Through winning numerous local and global awards, including the State of Qatar Encouragement Award in 2005, Ibrahim Jaidah became a highly recognized architect. Moreover, he authored the History of Qatari Architecture in 2010 and 99 Domes books in 2015 and recently Qatari Style. Therefore, he has been frequently invited to speak about the Qatari Architecture by esteemed institutions in various places of the world. Due to his passion for education, he also became an advisory board member in Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar and Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Qatar University.
In addition, Ibrahim is a dedicated advocate for sustainability and is a co-founding member of the Qatar Green Building Council. He is also a board member of Qatar First Bank and a member of Qatari Businessmen Association.
Nadia Maqbool
Nadia graduated from the Glasgow Mackintosh School of Architecture in June 2006 and became the first UK qualified female Omani Architect to achieve the Royal Institute of British Architecture (RIBA) chartered accreditation and registration with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). Nadia’s interest in creating sustainable cultural and environmental diversity is reinforced by her curiosity in how culture, memory and sustainability can play a positive interpretative role in architecture.
In 2011 Nadia together with Stuart Caunt jointly founded 23 Degrees North (23dN), an award winning Omani Architectural Design Studio. 23dN promotes design which is sensitive to the health of the individual, the community and the environment. It is driven by a desire to respond to the needs of contemporary culture by evaluating and learning from the wisdom embedded within the successful innovations of local and regional tradition. 23dN is the latitude of Muscat and deeply believes in essence in place and strives towards architecture and urbanism authentic to essence and all that roots it physically to essence; landscape, topography, climate and community.
23dN is the recipient of the National Entrepreneurship Award 2014 for Best Small Enterprise in the Service Sector. In 2017 it was shortlisted for Architectural Practice of the year while Nadia received high commendation as Female leader of the year both at the MEED regional awards. Notable projects include the Lycee Francais de Mascate; MEED National Winner 2016 for Best Social, Cultural and Heritage Project of the Year and the Outward Bound Oman Desert training center which is the first government funded building to be completely reliant on solar energy. The Outward Bound Oman Desert Training center has received a number of industry awards including: AIA ME Best Built Architecture, Best Sustainable Building at the Dossier Construction Awards 2017 and Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the Construction Week Oman Awards 2018.
Nadia is a graduate of the National CEO Program by the Diwan of Royal Court and IMD Switzerland. She is a member of the Oman Business Forum, an opportunity to connect with a diverse pool of expert likeminded individuals, leaders and influencers of the public sector passionate in the pursuit to diversify the national economy from oil and gas.
