Installation "Universe L"

We entered the long list of the competition for the best design of an art object for the flagship building of the Vorobyovy Gory Innovation Science and Technology Center of Moscow State University - the Lomonosov cluster.

We translated the fields of knowledge that Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov studied into the language of forms. Different volumes create an integrated spatial monument.

Lomonosov made discoveries, created devices for practical use, systematized and conducted research in various fields of knowledge. While working on the "Universe L" project, we reflected them in a complex form of spatial grids. They create a rigid structure, despite the apparent lightness.
It has a place for creativity, color, light, subtraction and multiplication. This form is stationary, but when moving around it, it looks dynamic.

The shape and color change relative to the value. So, for example, the volume of the molecular-kinetic theory of heat has a warm color, the spiral creates a hole in it, referring to the rotation of particles, by the way, spherical, as Lomonosov insisted.
Physics and chemistry permeate each other with color.
And the Russian language has a four-part structure, which includes rhetoric, grammar and style theory, poetic theory and practice, and literary creativity.

The installation is 20 meters high and becomes the dominant on the background of the building's facade. The maximum dimensions of the installation is 7x7 meters. Cell sizes range from 150 to 1000 mm.

Playground and kids club Renome | Part 4

The kids club is a new interpretation of a playroom, where a parent can leave a child for a few hours. This is a two-level room with many different play scenarios.

Wardrobe portal. First is seems just a black wall in the room. However, upon closer observation, it turns out that this is a wardrobe where you can hide, and then also find a portal to move to the space above the ceiling. Outside, you can draw with crayons.

Walking Renomester. The captain's bridge over the dry pool is equipped with a steering wheel that drives an abstract creature on the wall.
Grasping movements develop from the rotation of the steering wheel, and vision is stimulated by observing a moving object.
For older children, the mechanism help to start building cause-and-effect relationships, as well as to feel like a leader and come up with a role-playing game for any plot, because the fictional Renomister does not limit the imagination of children in a specific way.

Trajectory constructor. Perforated panels allow you to rearrange fasteners for constructor elements at your discretion. Gutters of various configurations, mills, gears set the path for the ball taken from the dry pool - the more complex the trajectory, the more interesting.
Such activities develop fine motor skills, creativity, logic, help to master the basics of mechanics.

Ear trumpet develops social skills, trains ear and curiosity. You need to speak in turn, and you can guess who is speaking only by voice. The ends are hidden at different levels: one is below the wardrobe, the other is inside the mezzanine.

Furniture constructor. Soft and durable, large and light construction kit consists of several modules that allow you to build castles and create furniture composites for different purposes.

The top level is a ceiling labyrinth that can be accessed from a magic wardrode or dry pool. Inside there are the route, the auditory tube and mesh windows: side and bottom. They stimulate sensory perception by changing material, and allow you to spy on the game from hiding. The labyrinth develops communication skills, orientation in space and stimulates the imagination.

Playground and kids club Renome | Part 3

This post is about the interactives that we designed for children from 3 to 10 y.o.

▪️The mechanical zone is a field of experiments with water, sand, and various mechanisms. Here it is interesting to play in a team, thus developing socialization skills. There is:
- One-minute water clock shows how time passes
- Mechanical station for studying the work of gears
- Stream that can be pumped with water or used to test objects’ buoyancy and tightness.

▪️The hide-and-seek labyrinth is an amphitheater with side galleries. It serves as a meeting place, a stage, and a labyrinth where to play different games and scenarios, for example, catch-up or hide-and-seek. Between the wings of the podium there is a net-hammock for relaxation, outside there is a built-in trampoline, and holes for peeping are made in the fencing panels. Here is the zero meter of the running route.

▪️The sand area is an inclusive area. Here we have made a table that a child in a wheelchair can drive up to. In addition, various artifacts that can be find during “excavations”are hidden here.

▪️Towers are the most dynamic modules designed to release energy, stimulate muscles and the vestibular apparatus, train coordination and social skills. In addition to a curved high slide, a tunnel, a suspension bridge and climbing nets, there are other surprises hidden in the towers: string telephones and a searchlight for mirrors, and outside - a vortex cannon.

▪️Grid maze allows children to invent role-playing games. The safety net requires physical effort to get through.

▪️Spy cube. The module provides a cognitive function for children in the mode of calm games. There are a lot of unusual interactives here, for example, peeping glasses with filter lenses, magnifiers for zooming in and out, rainbow hologram mode. The module includes interactive equipment: Sculptor Wall, Kaleidoscope, Optical Station, Austories Trumpet, Camera Obscura.

Playground and kids club Renome | Part 2

Today we tell about the tactile zone for babies (0-3 y.o.), which we created on the playground.

The tactile zone is located in a secluded place under a canopy and consists of several interactive panels. Here, kids can explore the world around by touch, train their ingenuity and fine motor skills. Outside there is also a slide and a swing - essential elements for the development of the vestibular apparatus.

Module panels:

➡️ Rotating cubes. Here babies can learn words and letters together with their parents. Wooden cubes engraved with contrasting letters enhance the perception of characters through a touch.

➡️ Mirror wall and hemisphere. One-year old babies recognize themselves in the mirror, and 3+ y.o. kids appreciate surprises, for example, their distorted reflection appearing in a hemispherical surface. The panel offers the study of reflections on different surfaces in a playful way.

➡️ Ball trajectory. This simple puzzle simultaneously trains fine motor skills, vision, and attention. 

➡️ Scales. The opportunity to change the world and leave a mark is important for children. This two-tone scale of metal plates trains fine motor skills, enriching the world of tactile perception, and allows kids to create by composing pixel patterns.

➡️ Texture palette. Materials are cold, warm, rough, prickly, smooth, solid, compound, sticky, fluffy and more. By stimulating tactile perception, the panel allows kids to explore the diversity of the surrounding world.

➡️ Chalkboard with peeps. Painting on the walls is one of the favorite form of creativity among babies. The double-sided chalkboard can also be a place for hide-and-seek, and the holes can be used to peek at parents.

On the babies’ territory we made a special game marking. For kids memorization classes are relevant: letters, numbers, lengths, as well as copying poses, gestures, movements. Markup provides opportunities for such activities in a dynamic way. In addition, children love to interpret abstract patterns for their own stories.

Playground and kids club Renome | Part 1

The main goal of the kids spaces project (playground + kids club) in the Renome residential complex is to give children the opportunity to touch the scientific wonders through a game. The plot of the whole space is Kid`s Laboratory. This project became the starting point of the Sminex standard for designing children's spaces in their residential complexes. All interactive equipment was developed jointly with scientists from the Polytechnic Museum.

The cramped geometry of the area set the idea for an extended play route. We invented an “inhabited fence” with many play functions, including hide-and-seek and grid labyrinths, science towers: a cube, mechanical and tactile modules.

In the scientific interactive stations of the site, that we designed in collaboration with physicists and mathematicians, children can independently control the light, or learn the basics of simple mechanics, experiment with optical illusions or develop hearing in acoustic simulators.

For example, one of the scientific stations became a “spy cube” where kids can create projections using a camera obscura or play with kaleidoscope effects in a multifaceted mirror space.

The functionality of the playground is divided into two categories and into different age groups:
➡️ dynamic games for endurance, strength and coordination outside
➡️ calm games that develop fine sensorimotor skills, creative and social skills inside

Game scenarios are complemented by markings on the surface. It is an imitation of city road signs that draw the kids’ attention to safety rules. In addition, marking the length of the route and different areas develop a sense of space, symmetry, rhythmic and metrical sequences.

The abstract image of the playground is suitable for playing with any plot and harmoniously complements the architecture of the residential complex.

Forest - Labyrinth for Volga Fest 2022 | Part 2

With the installation Forest-Labyrinth we have tested some new formats of the interaction and scenarios of using of the different parts of the object:

➡️ The Big Nest is a large open-air common space filled with hay. It is a central part of the installation that can not be seen from the outside. So, the visitors could reach it only casually. The Big Nest brings together all visitors, both adults and children.

➡️ The Hollow is a wooden leaning multi level tower with peeping windows.

➡️ The Hive, an hexagon with a regular internal structure, yurt-like in design. It buzzes and creates a small, cool shelter on a hot beach.

The Forest itself consists of scaffolding and a shell of planks. It is thick and rattling on the embankment side and thinning near the beach and river. On the beach, uneven tree trunks, roots and stumps create a space for free play and relaxation.

In the area of Forest-Labyrinth any adult does not remain a spectator, together with kids he could look into the hollow and wallow in the hay in the nest. Everyone choose the own path through the labyrinth, can transit through the main passages, can wander through the branches and find shelter.

Forest - Labyrinth for Volga Fest 2022 | Part 1

Volga Fest is an important summer festival. In 2022 the main topic of the festival was childhood. The organizers asked us to create a central interactive installation, a public space where kids and adults together could pass their quality time, try different formats of interaction with the object and with each other and have fun.

The Forest-Labyrinth is a magic way inside a mysterious and a sort of fairytale space. It is full of “streets”, exits and entrances, where everyone can travel and find different types of holes and animal’s houses.

Anthills and beaver burrows, bee hives and nests are our sources of inspiration for the mysterious world of the Forest-Labyrinth.

We have used some innovative construction solutions and we were able to build a complex temporary installation in 5 days.

We have created a unique installation for adults and children to play together, tested the formats, and concentrated many usage scenarios in a small area. This is a new interactive urban typology that we hope to repeat in our new projects.

Партнёр бюро Анастасия Рычкова примет участие в дискуссии «Экосистема загородной жизни, или Комфорт без ущерба».

В рамках Трека III Анастасия расскажет про проектные кейсы бюро, в которых велась работа с инфраструктурой в заповедных природных зонах.
