Sometimes an infra red camera does amazing things for customers...

at a project there was a problem with a freezer. seems like it wasnt working properly. food was defrosting and they couldnt keep it cold.

we looked at it and pointed out a block of frozen water in the back of the top chiller. it seems the owner did not completely defrost the freezer so cold air was only coming down one side.

after putting a fan in front of the freezer and COMPLETELY defrosting the chiller, we successfully fixed the problem.

STEAM saved the customer over 1,000 kronor in meat that was going to spoil. plus saved the customer the cost of buying a new freezer which saved them thousands of kronor.

the return on investment was tremendous for this homeowner. saving the meat in the freezer paid for the inspection!

Recently, we went to review a home a person was going to purchase for a renovation project. It became very clear it was not going to be as simple as they thought and costs were going to be higher than expected to renovate.

this wasnt going to be a new floor and paint and sell project...if the job was going to be done right. it was also very obvious why this house 110 sq meter home had a 40,000 SEK operating cost.

STEAM, AB recently went to another test site. This home was a fairly recent construction. The owner explained a problem with drafts in a room upstairs. We asked him not to tell us so we can see if the camera could independently verify the draft.

Within a few seconds we were able to identify the gap in the floor and baseboard under the heating element in his child's room.

BUT we also found drafts in other bedrooms along the floor as well as significant air infiltration behind some windows due to old sealant or insulation that is beginning to fail.

The homeowner is now knows exactly where the problems are and is able to develop a strategy to fix the problems and make the rooms more comfortable for their children when the weather turns cold.

We also detected a curious situation underneath the floor on the second floor where every other box between joists were not insulated, or insulated with enough material. It is not a major issue, but something that we found that a standard visual inspection completely missed.

STEAM, AB was called to a customer today regarding issues with a cold and uncomfortable room on the second floor.

The owner explained the home has been inspected several times and was told it was well insulated...but he knew something was not right...and his cold toes were correct.

While the attic was insulated, the v***r barrier was missing in many spots.

Dont let the temperatures trick you. This test was done today in sunny weather with 19 degree outside temps and 27 degree interior. When the weather turns colder, these dark blue areas will also turn a lot chillier. Now the owner knows what to look for and specifically where things need to be fixed.

Doors and windows are not the only problem areas...

It was great to be at Hornbach today for their "Spara Energi" event.

However, it was interesting their top suggestion was to replace all the windows...which we have learned over the years is NOT going to fix the problem of a drafty house.

Here is a before and after of how your home can stop leaking air and become more energy efficient and comfortable.

Picture 1: our test shows this 3 room bostadretlagenhet had 1.95 air changes per hour.

Picture 2: our thermal camera found a huge crack in the wall behind some old wallpaper. This leak as well as several other leaks around the windows, doors and seams between the wall and roof was fixed with fog/caulk. Total material needed for this fix? less than 200 SEK for fog and new weatherstripping.

Picture 3: the air changes per hour after these simple repairs. .72 air changes per hour.

So, what does this mean for comfort and warmth?

Picture 4: recently the outside air temperature was 11.8 degrees. BUT the inside was 24.4 degrees with no more cold drafts on the owners feet every evening and morning. No extra heaters were needed after our service and repairs!! That saves money on electricity bills and the fjärrevarme was operating at maximum benefit to the owner.

Today, we would like to discuss the topic of Air Change per Hour and why it is so important for comfort, health and energy conservation.

Picture number one is a typical 4 room home we tested. This home was filled with leaks from age, old insulation, old seals and construction mistakes. The number of air changes per hour was 3.86. This means ALL of the expensive warm heated air in this house escaped nearly 4 times EVERY hour.

To further understand what is going on, look at the Equivalent leakage area line that says 562 cm2. What this says is this home has a PERMANENT square hole in the wall that is 562 square centimeters when you add up all the small leaks.

Think about it...would any of you buy a house that had a permanent 23 cm x 23 cm hole in a wall that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year? Do you think during the cold months this would be a problem keeping your home warm. It absolutely would.

Something else to understand. The new Swedish building standard, EN 13829 suggests an air change per hour of .6.

The leaks in this house exceeds the building code by 600%. There is no mystery to us and the homeowner now why their heating bills are so high. And with our infrared inspection they know exactly where the leaks are to make repairs and lower expenses.

Here is an interesting demonstration of infrared technology that shows it effectiveness.

Below is a thermal image of 2 boys. One is healthy, the other has a small fever because of a flu.

The sick child is the one with the red color on his neck and face.

The temperature difference between the two boys was .5 degrees Celcius yet the camera easily picked it up.

Now think about your home/apartment when you try to keep it 20 degrees inside and its 0 degrees outside. We can and will find the leaks in your home easily--which will save you money on heating.
