Alright, lot of previously sold-out plants are back in stock, including Aglaonema pictum tricolor, Ficus pumila, Philodendron patriciae, Begonia phuthoensis, and many more! Check out ormbunker.se 🤟

Now thats a big boy. We got this Philodendron rubrijuvenile a year ago and it burned to a crisp in our greenhouse.

Seems to like it a bit more shaded as its its really been putting out some big leaves as of late. Its a really slow climber so we put it on a mosspole. Its growing entirely in sphagnum moss which works great for this species.

"Rubri" in the species name refers to the red underside of young leaves. This sort of fades with age but the roots still (for whatever reason) remain red. Makes for quite a display in a transparent pot. One of our absolute favs!

Your houseplant ficus is secretly a master engineer!
Most people walk past their ficus without a second thought. Big mistake. I hope it will change.

So listen, these plants have been up to some genuinely wild things for millions of years, and your windowsill specimen is just a tamed version of something far more interesting.
A few things that might change how you look at it:
Living bridges: In Meghalaya, India, people have been doing something remarkable for centuries: patiently weaving ficus aerial roots across rivers until they fuse into actual walking bridges. No construction crew. No concrete. And the longer they grow, the stronger they get.
The strangler habit: A lot of ficus species don't start life in the ground. They germinate high up in another tree's canopy, then slowly send roots downward until they hit soil. From there, those roots wrap around the host tree and gradually take over. The host often doesn't survive. Brutal, honestly...
Those aerial roots pull moisture and nutrients straight from the air. If your ficus isn't producing them at home, humidity is usually the culprit. Most species want it above 60% to really settle in :)

Thinking about a terrarium? Two species worth knowing:
Ficus pumila: Fast, vigorous, covers everything in a satisfying carpet of green. In the store on Sallerupsvägen 12 it is climbing on our banana tree... CUTE.
Ficus villosa: Hairy leaves, attaches to glass, genuinely strange in the best way. For the collectors.

Quick care note worth keeping:
Don't move them around :D

A tropical gardenin Scandinavia? Actually, yes.

🍌 Musa basjoo: the hardiest banana on the planet. The leaves die back in frost, but the roots survive down to -12°C and push out fresh growth every spring.
🌴 Trachycarpus fortunei: considered the world’s most cold-tolerant palm, surviving down to around -17°C. Protect the crown in winter and it’ll look like it belongs on a Mediterranean terrace.
🌵 Opuntia humifusa: a cactus that handles -30°C. The trick is very well-drained soil so the roots don’t rot over winter.
🦕 Dicksonia antarctica: a tree fern with fronds up to 2 m long and a trunk reaching 5–6 m at maturity. It’s surprisingly cold-hardy for something that looks this prehistoric. Down to -5°C without any protection, and -15°C with a little extra care for the crown.
Fatsia japonica & Chamaerops humilis round out the gang: both happy to tough out -15°C as long as you pick a sheltered spot and mulch the roots❤️

The common thread with all of these: a bright, sheltered spot, good drainage, and some mulch or fleece on the coldest nights goes a long way.

Several plants in this batch can survive Swedish winters with proper protection. Perfect time to plant them so they acclimatize before frost.

Outdoor standouts:
Chamaerops humilis: the northernmost naturally occurring palm, living up to 100 years
Trachycarpus fortunei: one of the hardiest palms, down to -18°C
Fatsia japonica: tropical look, survives -15°C
Nerium oleander (not cold hardy!): Roman garden classic, highly toxic

Hi everyone! 🌿

Here’s a quick update on our opening hours for the long weekend:

Friday: We’ll be at the Tropikmässa at Stadiongatan 25 in Malmö! 🐸 Come visit us from 11:00 to 16:00!
Saturday: Open 10:00–14:00
Sunday: Open 10:00–15:00
Monday: Open 10:00–14:00

For the event, we’ve prepared plenty of plants perfect for terrariums and more! You’ll find Actiniopteris radiata, Didymochlaena, Adiantum, and other unique ferns. Larger specimens like Blechnum gibbum and Cyathea will also be waiting for you.

We’ll also have begonias, alocasias (including larger sizes), as well as philodendrons and anthuriums. Plus some special finds like selaginellas, hoyas, pellionias, and orchids. And yes, bananas and Vanilla planifolia are coming with us too! 🍌

At our stand, you’ll also find accessories: LED lighting, moss poles, soil mixes and substrates, and transparent pots.
