Residence Botkyrka is Botkyrka konsthall’s context-specific residency programme in Fittja, and active within the interdisciplinary field of art, architecture, food and social practices. The programme encourages new forms of artistic research and art practices that engage in a local context, involving the community and supports projects that require longer stays. Botkyrka is part of Greater Stockho

lm and is one of Sweden’s most international municipalities. Residence Botkyrka promotes context-based art exploring the possibilities of art to influence a place and its identity. Residence Botkyrka works in public spaces and supports projects that are difficult to implement without a prolonged stay. Residence Botkyrka is also interested in the issues of co-creation and how the interaction between people can contribute to social change. Residence Botkyrka is run by Botkyrka konsthall and is a collaboration between the department of culture and leisure, the department of urban planning, the housing company Botkyrkabyggen, and the Multicultural Centre, a forum for research and artistic expression focusing on migration and social and cultural diversity.

Funding for Artist Residencies project example: The Creative Home Residency

The Creative Home Residency programme is a collaboration between AllArtNow and Residence Botkyrka, that aims to support artists who are parents or in another type of family constellation. It takes into consideration the challenges artists in a family setting face when trying to further their international networks and artistic careers and therefore offers child friendly accommodation where children/ partners / accompanying persons are welcome to join.

The residency encourages innovative and experimental forms of practices where you can engage with and have access to the residency apartment, the public space (urban or nature areas), a garden allotment, a variety of spaces within Botkyrka Konsthall, the artists' books archive and the public library.

AllArtNow Lab, with its newly opened Extention Art Space, also offers an exhibition space as well as a studio, that is regularly hosting international artists and is a meeting point for the Stockholm arts scene.

A long thoughtful conversation between Cecilia Germain & Temi Odumosu is now available to watch or listen to (soundcloud link in comments). They speak about what brought them to this collaboration with The Dream Keeper, and open-up some of the research processes behind specific artworks, occasionally deep-diving the poetics of artistic materials, as well as introducing some of the people and projects who have been inspirational in their work.

Artist Cecilia Germain & Temi Odumosu, art historian & curator, have both been in Residence Botkyrka's programme (physically and virtually) during 2020-21 to collaborate on the exhibition The Dream Keeper that runs until 21st August, Botkyrka Konsthall.

The conversation is in English.

"Memory for Forgetfulness"
Exhibition by artists Afrang Nordlöf Malekian & Cristian Quinteros Soto at The Archive / Botkyrka Konsthall

14/03/20-13/06/20

Artists Afrang Nordlöf Malekian and Cristian Quinteros Soto present their ongoing research on memory and forgetfulness connected to political movements in the Chilean and Iranian diaspora. The project has partly been developed through Residence Botkyrka’s programme and is now presented in the Archive at Botkyrka konsthall.

"A large group of people that came from Chile and Iran to Sweden between the seventies and the nineties, shared a background in leftist movements. The migration was partly a consequence of the coup d’état in Chile in 1973 and the revolution in Iran in 1979. These people continued to organize politically in Sweden – working together and separately. Many of these political activities are carried on by the next generation. As we are from the Chilean and Iranian diaspora, we would like to address this political heritage as an act of organization between these two groups.

During the last couple of years, we have been doing research through interviews, inviting groups and individuals for dinners as well as public conversations, and we have also visited various places that are part of this history."

The Archive at Botkyrka konsthall is currently showing a video installation by Matti Aikio (Sápmi/Finland) that was presented in connection to his talk on the 11 January. Last day to view the installation: 15 February!

The installation shows a selection of films, that in different ways are illustrating the situation of the Sámi and indigenous people's perspective on nature. Matti Aikio states that non-indigenous communities – like nation states – see nature as something exterior from their habitat, either as an exploitable resource, or as intact and pure; an entity that needs to be protected like an image. The indigenous relationship to nature is different. Here, nature is not something exterior, but the habitat which is cultivated by allowing for a multiplicity to exist and thrive. He considers this fundamentally different way of understanding nature as the main reason for conflict between indigenous people and nation states.

Residence Botkyrka’s programme is supported by Botkyrkabyggen and Nordic Culture Point.
