Jackson Design

Jackson Design Jacksons specialises in the very best of 20th century Scandinavian and International design with main focus on Scandinavian classics.

Paul and Carina Jackson opened their first gallery in 1981. Since then, they have built one of the most extensive collections of 20th-century Scandinavian and international vintage design. Celebrating over three decades in Stockholm, Jacksons has earned a reputation of providing an unparalleled standard of quality and expertise in the field. Jacksons maintains a deep respect for natural patina and

original wear, which is apparent in the unique character of our historic pieces. In 2007, Jacksons launched a satellite location in Berlin situated in the "Galerienhaus", alongside some of Europe's leading contemporary art galleries. Jacksons Berlin provides an expanded platform to experiment with exhibiting and re-invigorating historical design. The gallery seeks to mediate design history with thematic exhibitions, and to promote the work of some of the finest twentieth-century designers, architects, and artists working in furniture, lighting, ceramics, glass, and textiles. Jacksons has participated in numerous international design fairs, such as Design Miami/Basel and Modernism New York. Paul Jackson has been part of the vetting team at both TEFAF Maastricht and Design Miami/Basel.

Unique Cabinet
Designed by Archibald Knox
1901
Oak, brass, glass

Provenance:
Gifted by Archibald Knox to Alfred James Collister R.B.A. A.R.C.A.
Thence by descent.

History:
Whilst the metalwork Knox designed for Liberty & Co. is relatively commonplace, furniture designed by him is extremely rare. This sideboard was given as a wedding present by Archibald Knox to Alfred James Collister and Gertrude Beatrice Ward, 24th July 1901, where Knox was Collister’s best man.

Knox had met Collister at Art School and left the Isle of Man to join him in 1897 as a part-time assistant teacher at the new Redhill School of Art in Surrey. He soon became a regular designer for the ‘Silver Studios’ in Hammersmith, an agency which provided anonymous designs to many firms, including Liberty & Co. with which Knox is so famously associated. Around 1899 Knox returned to Man and made hundreds of designs over the next few years which were produced in silver and pewter, before returning to Kingston Art School as Design Master.

Of the few known furniture pieces, an oak clock case with stylistic affinities is illustrated in Stephen Martin (op.cit., p. 238). Of more interest is the contemporary photograph of a bureau (illustrated in op. cit., p. 108), also part of the wedding gift given to Collister. Martin notes the bureau, and so presumable the current lot, was made in the Isle of Man by craftsmen at the Ballanard Brick, Tile and Terra-Cotta Works, Ballanard Road, Douglas, where one of the principals, a Mr W. J. Ashburner, was also a close friend of Knox.

Circa 1930

Designed 1930-31, this example executed 1990s.
Naturally patinated bronze, decoration in relief.
Signed by artist, edition '3/6'. Stamped 'E. PETTERSSON FUD.''

Provenance:
Millesgården, Lidingö, Stockholm;
Locksley Shea Collections.

History:
This sculpture is a model for the monumental bronze figure of Apollo which is the focal point of one of Milles' best-known works, the Sun Singer monument to the Swedish poet Esaias Tegnér, commissioned in 1918 and finished in 1926. There is another cast of the present model in the collection of the Tate Modern.
