The owners had agreed that it would be a good idea to have the bed in the bedroom orientated to face towards the window so as to maximise the views of the greenery outside, especially when the automated curtains draw open in the morning. However, this would result in having the headboard of the bed against the bathroom wall, which is not ideal from a fengshui perspective. To mitigate this, we proposed having a headboard with storage to buffer the sounds, moisture and negative energy from the bathroom.

This headboard therefore became a multi-functional piece of carpentry. Other than integrating the bedside lights and switches in it, it also housed side cabinets for extra storage, deep cabinets for storage of extra pillows and bedlinen, and also acted as a side table. Despite the vertical depth, we designed for the carpentry to be easily accessible, while keeping the lines minimal for a clean look.

A home should be designed around your lifestyle and reflect your personality. For this couple who rarely watch TV, they did away with a TV, and a typical sofa set in their living area. Instead, the design of the living space focuses on their needs and how they would use the space daily. Reading, meditation, exercise, work, conversations over meals, every piece of carpentry becomes intentional and multi-functional.

The platform by the window offers views of the greenery outside and allows them opportunities for birdwatching. It is integrated with a bookshelf and also becomes a cozy reading spot. In the mornings, it is used for meditation and can double as a guest bed for the occasional guest. With storage space underneath, it truly maximizes the use of the footprint it occupies.

The table with a side cabinet is a working table by day, and a dining table on weekday evenings and weekend meals. The side cabinet provides space for the change between work and meals to happen with ease. The dining settee reduces the need for more dining chairs, while offering more storage space which is essential in this small apartment.

Installed between the window platform and the table is a set of fitness wall bars which the owners use daily. The neighbouring side cabinet is designed as a convenient spot for them to stow their exercise equipment away neatly after use.

The carpentry in this living space was designed to optimise use and blend in with the wall bars creating a coherence in the design language. The interchangeability of the functions in this small area shows that maximum use of a space can be achieved with careful consideration and thoughtful planning.

This 2-room BTO in Tengah was originally meant for a single lady; who met her husband while waiting for her keys, so it became a space for two instead. Carpentry was designed to be multi-functional within the limited footprint and also to allow for activities together, yet apart when required. The unit being on a lower floor, had direct views out to the garden and greenery outside, so the spatial layout was very much about maximizing the views out.

Featured here, the headboard with integrated storage. We will share more in the upcoming posts.

A redesign of this master bathroom balances functionality, comfort, and ease of maintenance. This home’s master bathroom retained its core layout but issues caused by a bay window were resolved. Rainwater had often entered through the window and accumulated out of view behind the vanity counter and hanging mirror, creating difficulty in cleaning and maintenance. The redesign extended the vanity counter to the window sill, providing greater depth with more counter space and simplifying upkeep while a new mirror was positioned to pivot from the side of a newly added storage cabinet, facilitating access to the windows.

Damaged carpentry due to moisture prompted a comprehensive carpentry overhaul in this revamp. Other than the vanity, a storage cabinet incorporating a niche with integrated warm lighting was introduced, elevating both aesthetics and functionality. The bathroom sunken shower area also had the steps redesigned to improve safety. The updated finishes, selected by the homeowners, exude warmth and tactility, complementing the dark walnut carpentry.

Additionally, the former sliding barn bathroom entrance door, which posed access challenges, was replaced with a straightforward swing door for improved convenience.

The master bedroom presented a unique design challenge. The clients expressed a desire to retain the existing platform with integrated storage while enhancing its functionality. They wished for the room to remain accessible to their boys for evening reading and playtime, and additionally hoped to incorporate a study area within the space. However, they were uncertain whether all these requirements could be accommodated. We proposed to enlarge the platform, thereby providing a more expansive area for the children to climb, read, play, and socialize, while also increasing storage capacity where needed. The clients responded enthusiastically to this proposal, which established the design direction for the room.

After carefully evaluating various configurations for the extended platform, study area, bookshelf, and sleeping zone, the final layout was selected for its familiarity and practicality. The sleeping area remained in its original corner, while the expanded platform served as a versatile interaction zone. A study table was placed at the end of the platform, offering panoramic window views that provide a calming atmosphere for work. The bookshelf was installed along the previously unused television wall, maximizing storage and utility. To enhance safety, what would have been sharp edges on the platform were thoughtfully replaced with elegant curves, ensuring a secure environment for the boys.

A new set of wardrobes along the walkway to the master bathroom were replaced, incorporating a side table for the bed, and also a dressing table at the other end next to the window.

When the family first moved in more than 10 years ago, they chose to leave the living room intact. However, over time, the limitations of the existing space became apparent; the low, false ceiling made the room feel dim and confined, which did not align with the family’s desire for a welcoming environment. To address this in the revamp of the living room, we suggested removing the outdated false ceiling, which had reduced both the brightness and spatial quality of the room. Instead, cove lighting was installed along the perimeter, providing a warm glow in the evenings. This change instantly improved the atmosphere, with light reflecting off the higher ceiling and making the room feel taller and airier.

The owners also wanted more storage space in the living room. To achieve this, floor-to-ceiling storage was incorporated along the right side of the entryway. The cabinets, featuring flush doors, discreetly store daily items, minimizing clutter. Across from this, the peninsula counter provides practical kitchen storage and serves multiple purposes, including space for groceries, morning routines, and gatherings. This counter naturally draws family and guests, fostering conversations and activities.

The living room design also includes a music nook next to the storage wall, accommodating a piano and creating an alcove for a guitar. This area encourages creative expression, allowing the family to enjoy musical moments together. A row of hanging bookshelves behind the sofa sets a backdrop for the seating area, while the adjacent space can be used by the boys for reading or studying.

This revised living room is functional and carefully designed to cultivate a relaxed, open atmosphere for the family and their guests.

For a family who cooks frequently, a functional kitchen is crucial. After a decade in their apartment, the owners knew exactly what they wanted to change. They desired a brighter, more spacious kitchen, achieved through a lighter color palette and low-maintenance finishes. The kitchen sink was relocated near the window for better lighting and ventilation. Overhead cabinets were removed to create a sense of openness. A sleek glass sliding door replaced the heavy, cumbersome original. The new kitchen carpentry maximized storage and neatly housed appliances.

The space outside of the kitchen was previously a circulation space with a spare fridge and we saw the potential of making the space more meaningful. We proposed to create a new peninsula counter which would also serve as a casual dining area for the family with counter seats on the other side. This peninsula counter ended up being one of the most utilized areas in the house, with the boys using it to do their homework on weekdays, for lego-building projects, and for the parents to do a quick spot of work, have coffee or chit-chat.

Our next project we will be sharing about, is the refurbishment of a family home that has been their sanctuary for ten years. As the family love the current place they were staying at, with a spectacular view of the reservoir from the bedrooms and balcony, they decided they would refresh the whole unit instead of moving away.

After a thorough design process, they embarked on a three-month journey of transformation, which included a total makeover of the kitchen, living room, and bathrooms, new carpentry for the master bedroom, and refreshing the other bedrooms. The result? A 'new' old house, as the youngest boy so aptly put it - a perfect blend of newness and familiarity.

Featured here is an interesting wall lamp resembling the moon, placed above the dining table on their balcony, exuding a warm ambience.

We are excited to share more in the upcoming posts.

This bedroom's design prioritizes simplicity and functionality. The integrated dressing table, wardrobe, and storage create a clean aesthetic, while the full-panel doors add a sense of height. A bold splash of colour on one wall, matching the workspace, injects vibrancy into the space, aligning with the owner's fondness for colourful touches.
