A random faux moss frame commissioned for a good friend of mine. I don’t usually do this, but i suppose it’s always nice to try something new. Built into a 93x63cm frame from Ikea, with a reinforced backing built in to hold the 7.4kg total weight.

2022-Present.

Still going strong after 3 years. This is literally the do nothing iwagumi; maintaining it requires zero effort, with the occasional misting if i happen to pop off the top to wipe the glass from the inside. If not, just let it sit there and it literally thrives on neglect.

Unassuming, oft overlooked. Yet in a rather well trodden stretch of this popular PCN, a rare giant goes largely unnoticed. This is a Tiger Orchid (Grammatophyllum speciosum), the world’s largest orchid, in full bloom.

To most park users jogging or cycling by it looks like any other plant; albeit messy, rather unglamorous and probably even grass-like in appearance. Yet orchids enthusiasts, botanists and just people who yearn to see one bloom often find it difficult to even come across one, much less in a place like this. It took 32 years of expert care and cultivation by expert horticulturalists to encourage this orchid to bloom at the renowned Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London. It made waves in Kerala, India, when a specimen they had in one of their botanical gardens bloomed earlier this year. It was even on display at our very own Orchid festivals in the botanical gardens, drawing international acclaim. Yet here it sits, unnoticed, uncelebrated and unassuming.

In the last picture of this series I juxtaposed it next to my bike just to show the massive size of this specimen.

Alocasia Macrorrhiza Variegata.
Planted this as a two leafer 5 months ago straight into the soil in a garden under full sun in Thailand. Added some osmocote, told them to water it as and when it gets too dry and left the rest to nature. The result: its now not only bigger than what i could ever hope to get it to be in a pot, its got some nice little pups at the side too. Not exactly rare or unheard of; pretty common even but it’s something I’m pretty proud of and love to just admire every time i come back here.

Introduction to Terra Coal specially treated for terrarium, imported from indonesia we trialed product wif moss and plants for terrarium and came out wif a terrarium medium and deco.Charcoal increases the ability to hold onto plant nutrients microbes by slowing or reducing the leaching of nutrients by rain or watering. The low density of charcoal lightens heavy soils, which allows better root growth, increasing drainage and allowing air into the soil.using moss a a secondary medium we create a healthy scape wif a uniquly sexy black look which not only absorbs out toxins ,it enhances the contrast of green plants and mosses. Now available wif all plug and play ferns enquire wif us ...alot more terra coal products to come

Here’s a closeup of the details in the big The have really taken root into the bark of the hardscape, and growing as it should in the wild. I’m hoping the same will happen with my next and maybe get a nice blanket over the fake foam tree. New leaf unfurling on the also means my mini ecosystem is stabilising well, hopefully. Let’s see how this grows!

2022. Ended the year with an accomplished goal. I set up the big one near the beginning of this year in a Detolf with hope and the excitement of doing something I’ve never done before. I watched it progress, learnt the hard way what worked and what didn’t, revamped and remade the whole thing in a Fabrikör (which was my original choice for an build), set up a fogger instead of a mist machine and just cleaned up everything in general. In a way, my journey with this little corner of my house reflected my personal journey of growth since we gradually began moving into this post covid era; a journey of new frontiers, change, rebuilding and accomplishment. And as we step into the new year, it is my wish that we as a species progress as well. Happy new year everyone. May we all prosper in this new world together.

So I revamped my entire and switched from a Detolf to a Fabrikör. Reason for this was the wooden base on the Detolf, no matter how much I waterproofed it, still had issues with warping and rotting and posed a hazard. It took a while and quite a bit of work, but after that’s all done it was quite worth the effort. The nice thing about recycling is, the plants have grown in pretty nicely and taken root right into the hardscape. This is a first true look at the whole set up at night. Coupled with the fern mount on top, it really brings in a slice of nature into an otherwise sterile living room.

So while I’m still working on the big terrarium this is currently sitting on, I thought I’d do another post on the mount I’ve worked on earlier. Despite thinking of adding more plants previously, I took a step back and decided to just let what is already there grow out. In nature, things are rarely overcrowded so in that sense I suppose simplicity really is the best. I’ll focus on keeping these two species on the mount for now and allow them to really take root and hopefully take off on this artificial branch. The epyphitic fern sitting on the top left is a blue oil fern, Microsorum Thailandicum, and hanging from the side a commonly found staghorn, Platycerium Bifurcatum.

Something new. An entirely diy mount made of foam and cork bark for Platyceriums and similar epiphytic plants. I made sure the insides were made of aquarium sponge so as to both absorb/retain some moisture and to allow excess water to drain freely. This design was made to be a wholly moveable display piece; the light attached is not strong enough to enable the plants to photosynthesise effectively so a suitable sunlit location is still highly recommended. The entire piece was inspired by a fellow Japanese artist , who has been an inspiration for my recent staghorn mount craze. The planting process may be further amended in the future, but for now, i am excited to share this latest showpiece of mine. Will post up some updates as the project progresses.

4 months in since the collab with Eco Arts Aquatic and the begonias have grown in like crazy. Added in some more since we found that with daily misting the begonias thrive, and though the caladiums have died off the bulbs survived and put out smaller leaves. To our advantage it seems. The caldera wasn’t really working and a begonia grew there so we gave it a proper place to take root, added in soil and moss and took out the atomiser. End result was a natural looking, nicely matured setup.
