One week on… A tribute to Mr William Lim.

As a student I couldn’t understand much of what he said, but I could vividly recall his hairstyle, which resembled the man with similar hairdo on the ‘Hacks’ cough candy wrapper.

Years later, he was very much a part of the conversations at TANGGUANBEE, the studio of my formative years. He was instrumental in galvanising the hearts and minds of fellow architects who shared similar thoughts and probably ideals. Through AAAsia, I assimilated into the ‘other’ realm of architectural practice, and met some of the most influential and foremost architects in our region.

As a young practitioner setting on my own, he offered words of encouragements and inspirations, as well as pointers for critical thinking.

As unique as his hairstyle, Willie will always be remembered as a modernist pioneer with unique, thought-provocative stance on architectural practice and philosophies.

Above all, I will always respect Willie as a fighter, who was constantly charting new frontiers - exemplified by his words and also his body of works.

Grateful to have been invited to speak at the recent conference ''New Vernacular Grounds'', jointly organised by The UCSI School of Architecture (Malaysia) and the Department of Architecture, Shih Chien University (Taiwan).

It was an enriching experience meeting fellow architects and aspiring students/graduates from Taiwan and South-East Asia.

A Tribute to a Master

As architectural students, we were introduced to his works; he was revered as the pioneer for ‘high-tech architecture’. With the meagre savings I had from an internship, the Center Pompidou was an architectural pilgrimage site that I had managed to set foot on and get assimilated into.

Many years later, never had I imagined, to have the great privilege of meeting this master in person, and having inspiring conversations with him, at a house we designed.

Thank You for Your inspiring words of wisdom.

May You rest in peace, Sir Richard Rogers.

Studio SML

Our heartfelt thanks to Kelley of The Press Room for organising Studio SML, held at the National Design Centre till 31st October 2021.

‘’This is a project to document the journeys of local architects and designers, and the sacrifices, struggles, and rewards that come from pursuing a career in the creative industry. Each interview serves as a mini-biography of each creative in Singapore.

The mission for Studio SML is to document them before they shine, and to document them before they die - eventually the archive will serve as a comprehensive resource of design studios in Singapore, and a historical documentation for the future generations of Singapore designers, and Singaporeans in general as an educational platform on the design histories of Singapore.’’

We are indeed very privileged and honoured to be part of this meaningful project!
