Historically more compact, these handles have progressively lengthened over the last twenty years, evolving in proportion and in gesture. The Brera project reinterprets this transformation with balance, combining traditional style with a contemporary sensibility to offer a designer handle able to dialogue with contemporary architecture. The handle has an essential neutral aesthetics and works like a sort of ‘passe-partout’ with a touch of memory, but it is contemporary and modern at the same time.
We paid a lot of attention to ergonomics, very pleasant in the hand thanks to the rounded section inside the handle. This rounded part contrasts with the visible flat portion of the handle and creates an unexpected effect.
Functionality, durability and comfort are the prime components of the work. An architectural language which is not shy of aesthetics, but resists fashion and trends.

We had long been nurturing the idea of designing a handle, and the meeting with Olivari was decisive in taking action.
Two had to be the design premises: to be expressive of our architectural feeling and to meet, at the same time, the appreciation of the younger generation.
It was with these ideas in mind that Lipstick was born, obtained from the balanced composition of essential geometric elements and open to material evolutions.

The studies conducted to fine-tune the Chelsea handle are an expression of Jean Nouvel’s artistic sensibility. He designed it when he was working on 100 11th Avenue in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan, a 23-storey residential tower he describes as “a vision machine” that captures reflections from the nearby Hudson River. For the handles, Nouvel asked us for an unusual model. He wanted a shape that was different from the tubular geometry conventionally used for the lever.

As a young designer, I introduced myself to the Olivari brothers by proposing a handle so minimal, it almost disappeared, the idea won them over immediately, and they enthusiastically lent their support to develop it.
It wasn’t easy. The thin profile of the lever needed to enter into a relationship with the thickness of the rose.
By joining the forms and surfaces along the horizontal plane in the most fluid way possible, we succeeded in designing a handle that we could describe as being quasi non-existent. — Javier Lopez
